I'm such a bad writer. I said that from now on, I'd only be working on updating my Whovian Prompts and here I am writing a little Sherlock oneshot because it suddenly appeared in my head. There's no spoilers and it probably doesn't fit in with the canon but I wanted to share it anyway.

"Greg's here," John remarks.

Sherlock is looking into his microscope and asks distractedly, "Who?"

"Sorry," John corrects himself. "Inspector Lestrade is here."

"Oh, George. Send him in."

As he enters the flat, Greg rolls his eyes in a resigned manner; he's sort of used to it by now.

"Erm, Sherlock," John sounds perplexed. "His name is Greg."

"Unnecessary information," Sherlock says dismissively.

"Are you being deliberately rude? How can someone's name be unnecessary information?"

"Takes up too much space in my mind palace."

"It's only four letters long," both John and Greg protest at the same time.

"Yes and entirely unnecessary information," Sherlock explains exasperatedly as he lifts his head from the microscope. "I do not need to know Lestrade's first name any more than I need to know the Earth revolves around the Sun."

John groans inwardly. Only last week, they had had a conversation about the solar system and John was surprised that Sherlock did not know that basic fact about the Earth and the Sun. He is about to protest that knowing someone's name is necessary for social niceties, which of course Sherlock is also clueless about. Before John can voice his thoughts, Sherlock speaks.

"Yes, yes, it's nice to know someone's name but it's not going to help solve this case. Therefore, it is cluttering up my mind palace when the space would be more useful as a place for the cold, hard facts of this case and any other case I may come across. So, shut up and let me detect and consult."

John sighs and looks apologetically at Greg. It occurs to John that this is yet another battle he's lost to Sherlock. He wonders if there's a space in the detective's mind palace where he keeps a tally of their battles.
