Where was she?, he asked himself.

She wasn't in any of the labs, nor the cafeteria, nor her quarters.

He thought harder.

Where could she be?

The answer hit him like lightning.

"Of course," he said to no one in particular. She was there.

Katherine Manx sat on one of the two chairs on the balcony of the West Wing. She looked forward, the sun was just setting, and hints of night were beginning to show.

Earth was beautiful, despite the obvious struggles that occur there regularly.

She smiled.

This was one of the reasons she does what she does- to protect this beautiful world, this city, and its inhabitants. So that, unlike her planet, and countless others, it will not crumble down under the clutches of Gruumm. Well, part of the reason.

The setting sun looked beautiful, as its rays faded away and the stars revealed themselves, twinkling for all to see. It never failed to amaze her.

She heard him clear his throat, and she turned around.

"Doggie," she said, her tone somewhere between exclamation and questioning. She quickly regained herself, blinking into reality. "What?" she asked, her eyes wide, realizing that her friend had been staring.

"I'm sorry," he told her, as he walked past and leaned on the railing. He sighed. "If I'd just listened, you wouldn't have been kidnapped by Broodwing."

A small understanding smile graced Kat's lips as she got up off the chair and stood there next to him. "Don't blame yourself for something you couldn't have foreseen. It's just more guilt on your shoulders."

"Isinia told me the same thing, before..." he trailed off, not wanting to remember.

She looked away from him, as he pierced her heart with words.

"Doggie, I..Really, don't blame yourself. I'm alright." She held the tears that were threatening to destroy her.

The silence that followed lasted a lifetime.

"No, Kat, It is my fault." He paused. "I never wanted to hurt you like that, and I did. And for that, I'm sorry."

She breathed, looking downward.

Without any hesitation, she wrapped her arms around him, resting her head on his chest, and let the tears fall.

Doggie smiled as he enveloped his arms around Kat, who, over the years, has become the one and only reason he fights as he does.
