The first time he experienced true pain was when he was a child. He was playing out in the snow (for really, what else could he do?), when he spotted his sisters , Belarus and Ukraine coming towards him and the house they shared.

"Privet Belarus! Ukraine!" he yelled happily. He began to run to them, but stopped a few yards away from them when he noticed that Ukraine was in tears.

"Sister, what's wrong?" He said, shocked.

"Vanya!" his younger sister, Belarus, called out to him. There was sorrow in her voice.

"Da?" he asked. He was curious as to why she seemed so sad.

"Good bye." was all she said before both she and Ukraine turned and left.

He froze. They had said 'Good bye.' Did this mean... that they were leaving him? Tears fell freely down his face. "Belarus!" he called, "Ukraine!" but it was no use. They were already gone. He cried for hours out i the snow, until his tears ran out, and he was too cold to remain outside. Numbly, he walked inside, and lay down on the floor in the middle of his room. "No..." he murmured quietly right before he fell unconscious. The first crack appeared in his mind and his heart.
