"I guess it's gone for good," Nel said, having returned after a long day of searching for a necklace in which she truly treasured.
"Hmph, ya really don't change do ya?" said a voice, which to Nel was very obnoxious and deceiving. A voice you couldn't trust. Nel turned around and frowned.
"I thought you were dead." She said, becoming expressionless.
"Heh," he scoffed, "You think I'd be gone that easily? You're so fucking shallow…" said this person, revealing his crescent-shaped blade. "It's been so long. How about a battle? Just for old times sake." He said, grinning deceitfully. Nel turned her back to him.
"I have no interest in fighting you, Nnoitra…" She said, calmly. "I think you already know that you're weaker than me." Her reassuring arrogance angered Nnoitra. It was like poison being shamed by a woman, let alone Nel… He slammed his blade in the wall just next to the female's face.
"You stupid whore!" he yelled. She sighed and shook her head.
"Still no self-control, Nnoitra. And then you continuously wonder why you're still below me." She said. She turned to face him. Her lack of expression was what angered Nnoitra the most. "And will always be. Because you're an untamed animal." She said. This angered him. He swung the blade at her. She easily caught the blade with her hand. "Even after tasting your own blood. Eating the sand. Shaking hands with defeat, you still manage to get back up and attempt to finish what you started. You crave it. Bloodlust." She explained. It was amazing how her whole complex could completely alter at the mere sight of one person.
"Fight me!" Nnoitra yelled, trying hard to get the blade to touch her face. It didn't. Nel sighed.
"No, Nnoitra. I'm tired of fighting you." She said, furrowing her eyebrows.
"What's that supposed to mean?!" He yelled, slowly, hesitantly putting down his weapon. At this point, he was completely dumbfounded.
"You see, Nnoitra, it's like constantly watering a plant, knowing that if you over water it, the plant will die. There's a limit to how much water the plant should get. And you know that limit, but every now and again, you go past the limit because you care and worry that it's not getting enough water. Yet, you know it is." She explained. Her head fell, as she was looking down. "Fighting you is like me over watering the plant, that has already been watered."
"Just accept the fact that these numbers mean nothing anymore." He said, crossing his arms and grimacing.
"They do. They always will. It's permanent. Whether you surpass me or not, there will always be a time that I was stronger than you. And that is what the number is for. To remind us that we will be weaker or stronger than others. In a state of mind, I'll always be stronger than you. Accept it." She said. This sounded more like a demand. Nel watched as Nnoitra's knees hit the sand, and his weapon drop, next to him. She saw the expression on his face. Defeat. Finally, he has accepted that he will never surpass her. She kneeled to his height and smiled. "Let's be friends." She said, holding her hand out. She waiting for his approval. He hesitated, but soon, grabbed her hand. She helped him off the sand. "Let's put the past where it should be. Behind us." She said. He said nothing. He didn't know what to say.
Facing the fact that he was weaker than her was more relieving than humiliating. All the senseless killing could stop now. He can accept the peace that was originally offered to him. And he could live as every other person was. He looked down at Nel. "Now, I need help. I lost my necklace. Will you help me search for it?" She asked, with a smile on her face.
"Sure." He said. She held his hand and they began their journey.
