Edward jumped through my window and came face-to-face with my new best friend. "Bella," he started. "What is that?"
"He's not a 'that,' Edward. He's my new pet."
"It's a cat."
I rolled my eyes. "Thank you, Captain Obvious."
"But Bel-la," Edward whined. "It's a cat. Of all the things you could have gotten, you chose a cat?"
I walked over to my bed and sat down with my new pet in my arms. Edward sat on the bed as well, but as far away from the kitten as possible. I sighed. "Would you like me to explain my choice?"
"Please," he responded. "By the way, Bella, what did you name it….him?"
I smiled. "Eddie."
"No. I will not have a cat named after me."
"But Edward, it's cute. And I only named him that because he reminds me of you."
"How on earth does he remind you of me?" Edward wanted to know; he asked with narrow eyes.
"Watch." I put Eddie on the floor and waved the shadow of my fingers in front of him. The small gray kitten hunched down and growled before he pounced. "See? He's gray. You always have to wait before you can see me, because of the sun, and it's gray when it's cloudy. And he has topaz eyes, just like you. And he growls and pounces on things."
"And this is how you remember me?" Edward asked incredulously.
"Yes, but that's not all." I walked over to my dresser and picked up the stuffed lamb Edward had given to me. I put it in the middle of the floor and rejoined Edward on the bed. We watched Eddie curl up with the lamb.
"Okay, Edward. Walk over there, human speed, and pick up the lamb."
Edward sighed and got up, reaching out for the stuffed animal. Eddie jumped up and hissed at Edward, all of his fur standing on end. Edward tried a few more times before giving up. "I can't do it, Bella. I cant' get the lamb. But I don't see what this proves.
I tried to fight the onslaught of giggles threatening to overcome me. "The way Eddie protects his lamb is the same way you protect me." Edward seemed to be considering this.
Finally, he sighed. "I suppose."
An idea hit me and a sly smile crept across my face. Edward's eyes narrowed as he looked at me. "Bella? Why are you smiling like that?"
"Oh I was just thinking of the last way Eddie reminds me of you."
"And what would that be?"
I shrugged nonchalantly. "He purrs."
I caught Edward off guard; he looked at me incredulously. "I-I don't know what you're talking about," he stuttered. Alice and Rosalie, who had warmed up to me considerably, told me that Edward had, in fact, purred. He just hadn't done it loud enough for me to hear. But all that was about to change.
"Really?" I knew Edward was much too "manly" to freely admit it, so I could have to force him. I inched closer. "Because Rose and Alice had me under the impression that if I were to do something you really liked," I moved closer still, "that you would purr."
"They-they…lied," he forced out as I pushed him back onto the bed and straddled his waist.
"Well, I guess I'll just have to see for myself."
And with those words, I attacked. Edward moaned against my mouth and I decided to try something new. I abandoned his mouth, making Edward groan, and kissed his collarbone, as he had done to me many times. But Edward finally expressed his pleasure in the form of purring when I lightly nipped his neck with my teeth. I bit him a few more times before I kissed his neck and moved up to his ear.
"See," I whispered. "I knew you could do it."
Edward looked in my eyes. "I think I may actually like that cat," he said. "But I still don't think we're anything alike. Maybe you should convince me again."
