Savannah Wheddon walked to the mailbox on a warm may day. She opened the box and pulled out the mail. She shuffled through the mail. Bills, requests for her program, etc… until she came upon a letter with familiar scribbled on. Her heart stopped as she looked at the letter. It made her think of all those years ago, when she was 21.
Oh John, She thought as she walked back inside really quick. Tim and Alan went out and wouldn't be back until later. She dropped the other on the dinning room table and worked on opening the letter. Finally she got it open and unfolded the letter.
Dear Savannah,
You probably weren't expending this letter in the mail; consider how we left things many years ago. If you have this letter in your hands, then that means I am dead.
She let out a sob. John was dead? No. She collapsed in a chair at the table. After a couple of minutes, she willed herself to finish the letter.
Savannah, I want to say sorry for all of things I have said. I know you probably hated me awhile after saying those things to you that day outside the hospital. But you and Tim…you both deserve to be happy. I am the one who donated the money for Tim's treatment, because you deserve to be happy. After meeting with you, I discover I wanted more out of my life, so after serving in the army for other two years, I left. And found some happiness.
I want you to do me a favor, Savannah. I want you to visit someone…well, I should say some people very special to me. Could you do that for me, please? I am sorry to have to ask that to you, but you will see why if you decide to do its. They live in Wilmington, the place where we met all those years ago. I wish with all my heart that you were happy with your family.
I love you, always and forever, my one true love
John Tyree.
She re-reads the letter, but the words 'some people very special' stood out to her. Did John get married after leaving the army? A part of her was being selfish and hated the woman who stood by his side as his wife and had his children. Her and Tim hadn't even gotten to that point in their lives yet because of the program, but of course she thought as the children as her own and plus there was Alan.
"Savannah, we're home!" Tim shouted as he and Alan walked through the front door. She couldn't bring herself to wiped away her tears and that how Tim and Alan found her. "What's wrong?" He asked, all panicky. She held the letter out to him and he took it, while Alan rubbed her. Tim read the letter.
"Oh, Savannah," He said as he kissed her cheek. Even thought he was her husband, he couldn't fault her for loving her first love still. After all, if he didn't married her while John was away, he would have been the one to married Savannah. To read that John was the one, who donate that money… well, was a little heart breaking to him, because if it had been any other man, he would have died. But John, being the person who he was, he was giving a chance for Savannah and him to be happy. And that's why Tim admired John so much. They did their own grieving as Savannah decides to make dinner. It was around 7ish when they ate dinner.
"Savannah, you want to go do John's favor?" Tim asked after saying grace. Savannah looked at him.
"You sure?" She asked. She was surprised that Tim wanted to do it.
"Yeah, I think you should, who he was to do and all. And plus we were going to go down from the habit for humanity, so…." Tim said. She looked at him, wondering how she ended with such a good man.
"Thank you," She said.
