"I love you Lili Zoller..." A pair of dark brown eyes gazed down at her.

Lili turned her head, "Oskar... Not here... They'll hear,"

She started to walk away when a warm hand grabbed her to stay. "Lets leave, lets get out of Germany, we can go to Switzerland... Or America even. We can't stay here, we are so close to being pulled apart."

She closed her eyes and sighed, "...I know. He knows. And so does Frederick. I love you, but if we leave, we have to go soon."

"Tomorrow, lets take the train over the border. We can leave this life behind, so I can actually be free. You know they will come for me eventually..."

"Okay, I need to pack my bags. Be here at five tomorrow morning, we need to leave before they notice." They shared a chaste embrace and went their separate ways.

Still dark outside, Lili waited on her front steps surveying the area every five seconds, not knowing who she was looking for, whether a Nazi or her love. After ten minutes, Oskar still had not arrived.

"He's not coming you know."

Lili whipped around to see her father standing in the shadow of the door. "...What do you mean?"

"I just received a telegram informing me that your Jew boyfriend has been found by the gestapo,"

From that moment, Lili's life changed. She never knew what happened to the love of her life, Oskar. Her father, a high ranked Gauleiter (regional leader) of the Nazi Army, never allowed her information about him. The only thing he'd say would be, "You were too naive. He's a dirty Jew and you're a daughter of Germany. You're lucky I'm still keeping you as my daughter."

She easily became depressed and sick of the war. Lili didn't care who was a Jew or that she was German. She disagreed with the entirety of the war, but didn't know how to get out of it. Her brother was a Nazi soldier too, so the war was all around her.

Lili's days were filled with anger and resentment. She took up self-defense classes, because she never wanted to be taken advantage of again, not just mentally. She promised herself that she would be able to protect herself, for Oskar.

After her brother Frederick foolishly earned his title as a war hero and his Goebells movie, Lili's father suggested she move to France where Frederick was stationed. He thought this would change her for the better, and she could find a Nazi husband at the same time. Lili pondered the idea for a few days. She decided she would give Paris a chance, not to change, but to start a new life with out her father tampering in it. She didn't consider her father or her brother her family anymore. She thought of them as strangers. She hated them for what did to her and every single Jew in Europe.

She arrived in Paris a week later, and found her own apartment.

Months went by and Lili's life had slightly improved. She lived off the money she made by selling her art and teaching self-defense at a nearby school. She ignored her brothers knocks and telegrams. He had tried to introduce her to his Nazi friends countless times. She told him to get out of her life, but he never got the clue.
