Pairing: Kaname/Yuuki
There she stood, Artemis Scythe in hand, ready to stop him, a barrier between him and his goal. She was his light, as well as his darkness. For him, she was both the beginning and end of his world. Even though he hid it well, he still loved her, undeserving as he was, longed for her, monster as he was.
She was no longer at his side, could no longer be with him. He was a bad man, couldn't she see? He could see her tremble slightly as she faced him, clear reluctance, mixed with determination, shining in those red-brown orbs that he so adored.
Adored, and reviled. Her eyes showed how she truly felt, the stream of thought at that very moment, and, yet, there was also a distance in them. He could see the long hair that stroked the ground, those silky strands he had once loved to entangle his fingers in, had once brushed with such tenderness. Now, her hair was short and choppy, a separation of a him and her.
They would never be together again, for this was the end of a brief and happy era. She was no longer the wingless bird shackled to his side, content to obey his every whim. The beast inside him growled at the thought of her with another her man- namely, with Zero Kiryuu-kun. As usual, the part of him that was a man, still human, rejoiced. She was stretching her wings, tasting freedom, letting the wind brush her unfurled wings.
Still, sadness engulfed him. He hadn't wanted to leave her, to face her as one would an opponent in battle. Yet, here they were, doing just that. He knew one of them would have to strike first- and it wouldn't be her. The scythe did not fit Yuuki, it was too big, and the weapon of a killer. As far from her side as he was, he knew that much, that her pure heart detested destroying a life, even if it would be for the best.
Despite that, she still stood on one side, he on the other. They were too opposites, two unwilling enemies that had to fight the other. This was the way, and she was an obstacle in his path, the one obstacle he would have done anything to not have to face her.
Still, she was his enemy, as he was hers.
They stood opposite the other, each on the separate side of a divide.
