A silver-haired man looked out at the stars. sipping his coffee. He stood at the top of the academy's tower, thinking about the students that were to arrive in a few days. As he stared out into space, he observed a shooting star, seemingly falling toward the surface in its orange glory.
Wait.
Stars did not glow orange. Looking closer, the headmaster saw that the object was not a star, but rather a meteor. The meteor seemed to be heading for the Emerald Forest. The man sipped his coffee once more, then pulled his scroll from his pocket. He tapped on the screen a few times before putting the device to his ear. The meteor was getting closer, its descent emitting a roar, yet it seemed to be slowing down. Curious.
"Ozpin?" came the voice of Glynda on the scroll. She sounded tired. The headmaster feared he had awakened her.
"Glynda, I'm sorry to disturb you, but I need you to meet me at the Emerald Forest."
"What's wrong?"
"An unidentified falling object is going to crash into the Emerald Forest. We should investigate."
"I'm on my way."
Professor Ozpin moved through the academy, repeatedly glancing at the "meteor". As he moved, the headmaster thought he saw the object level off before it crashed into the forest. Was it some sort of prototype aircraft? Possibly. Was someone trying to attack the school? If so, the object could very well have been a distraction. With a few taps on his scroll, Ozpin configured the security systems to "Level 4 Alert" status. One could never be too careful.
Ozpin met Glynda at the edge of the forest, part of which was now on fire as a result of the crash. The duo moved through the forest as fast as they could, using their weapons and abilities to put out the fires until they reached the crash site.
Upon closer examination, the crashed object was not a meteorite, but in fact an aircraft of some kind. It did not look like a bullhead, nor did it seem to be of Altas origin. Surely, James would have notified them if there was a malfunctioning prototype in the vicinity.
Ozpin's thoughts were interrupted by a hissing sound, accompanied by a door sliding open in the back of the craft. Glynda pointed her riding crop at the doorway, ready to defend the two of them from a potential threat. A hooded young man walked out of the vehicle, his stance calm yet guarded. He wore a set of robes that appeared to be of Southern Mistral design with a hooded cloak that partially obscured his face. Ozpin could not fully identify the color scheme of the outfit, as it was nighttime. In addition, there was an almond-colored, metal tube hanging from the stranger's belt. Most likely a weapon or flashlight.
"Hello," Ozpin greeted. "I am Professor Ozpin. Are you injured?"
"I'm alright, thank you," the young man replied. His accent seemed Atlesian in origin. He lifted his hood to reveal short, dark blond hair that was well-combed and grey eyes. "My name is Galen Sorn."
"Might I ask what happened that caused your airship to crash and if anyone else is on board?"
"There is no one else. The crash was caused by the hyperdrive malfunctioning, which in turn damaged the engines."
Ozpin raised an eyebrow. "Hyperdrive?"
"Yes. The hyperdrive enables a ship to travel at lightspeed."
"Lightspeed?" Glynda asked, greatly skeptical.
Galen looked at the two teachers, then his eyes widened. "What is this planet's most advanced method of transportation?"
"I would have to say travel by airship," Ozpin answered. "Statistically, it is the fastest and safest way to travel. I take it there are better means where you come from?"
Galen nodded. "Indeed. I know this sounds hard to believe, but I am not from this planet."
"Are you saying you're an extra-terrestrial?" Glynda asked incredulously. "I find that very hard to believe."
"It would explain the need to travel at lightspeed," Ozpin said calmly. "I take it this is a spacecraft of some sort? We have satilites and probes, but the idea of space travel has never truly appealed to us, as many believe there is nothing out there but stars and barren rocks."
"But that's impossible!" Glynda protested. "We've never found any signs of life on nearby planets."
"Then I am not from this star system," Galen surmised. "My ship is meant for travelling great distances across the known galaxy. Given that your planet has not yet made first contact, I assume this in what my people call the Unknown Regions. Either that, or I am in another galaxy entirely." His brow furrowed in worry. "If my ship cannot be repaired, I could very well be stranded here."
"Clearly, you need shelter for the night," Ozpin reasoned. "Our academy is not far from here. Tomorrow, we can discuss your situation in detail."
"Excellent suggestion," said Galen.
As they moved through the forest, Galen stopped and looked around, mouth slightly opened. "Something foul is approaching," he murmured. "Something sinister."
The bushes to one side of the party moved and several Beowolves leaped out. Glynda easily dispatched one with her weapon, but then something unexpected occurred. A snap-hiss sound was heard and the two professors looked behind them. Galen leaped over their heads, brandishing a blade of blue light. He landed on the Beowolf and stabbed it through the skull before leaping to the other and decapitating it. The rest of the Grimm were easily dispatched.
"Very impressive, Mr Sorn," Ozpin commented. "I don't believe I've seen another weapon quite like yours."
Galen deactivated his weapon and held it out for the two to see. "This is a lightsaber," he explained. "It is powered by a central crystal called a Kyber crystal. This is the weapon of my order, the Jedi, and of our bitter enemies, the Sith."
"Very impressive," said Ozpin. "I would ask you more, but we are in a forest full of deadly Grimm. We should keep moving."
Galen nodded. "I assume that these Grimm are the evil monsters we just disposed of?"
"Yes," Ozpin confirmed. "They are soulless beasts, creatures of pure evil. The nearby academy, of which I am headmaster, trains young men and women to protect our people from the Grimm and other evils, such as crime and terror."
"Interesting. Lead the way."
The trio made it back to the academy and Ozpin readjusted the security systems back to normal. "The Fall semester has not started yet, so none of the students are here. I'm sure the incoming first-years won't mind if you use one of their future rooms for the night." He took Galen to the first-year dormitory and unlocked one of the rooms. "I hope you'll be comfortable."
The young Jedi gave a light bow. "Thank you for your hospitality, Headmaster. I shall answer any questions I can in the morning."
"Agreed," said Ozpin. "No doubt we have many questions for each other."
Galen nodded and entered the room before closing the door. The idea of being on a primitive world that had never heard of the Jedi was a lot to take in. Granted, there were many planets throughout the galaxy that had not yet developed space travel or even used blasters, but he was never the first visitor. All such planets he had ever been to had made first contact prior to his arrival. Actually making first contact himself was a foreign concept. He needed to determine the state of his ship and if he could get off-world. If the ship was beyond repair, then he would be trapped on an unfamilliar world for perhaps an indefinite amount of time. The young man sat cross-legged on one of the beds and closed his eyes. "There is no emotion," he recited, "There is peace. There is no ignorance, there is knowledge. There is no passion, there is serenity. There is no chaos, there is harmony. There is no death, there is the Force."
With the moment's peace of mind, Galen laid down and went to sleep.
