It was a hot, sweltering day in Miami. She was glad she had a big, air conditioned house-okay, mansion-to live in. But she wasn't inside of it. She was lounging by her pool in her little, turquoise string bikini. A man in a tuxedo was waiting on her while she laid back, reading the Biscayne Bay Tribune while a large stack of other newspapers lay on the ground beside her.
"Here you are, Miss Riaz." the waiter said, handing her a margarita.
"Thank you, Hector." she deadpanned, taking the glass from his tray.
"Anything else?"
"No, but thank you." she dismissed him. He returned about ten minutes later.
"Miss Riaz, Mister Caine is here."
"Mister Caine…" she repeated.
"Do you want me to send him out?"
"No need." she stood up and placed her sunglasses on the wooden patio table. She plucked a sheer, black kimono cover up from the back of her chair and slipped it on, not bothering to tie the robe closed. She walked into the cool house. She smiled at the redhead sitting at her kitchen table. "Horatio Caine."
"Marquilla," Horatio said lowly, taking his sunglasses off, "Marquilla Riaz."
"Why are you here?"
"Well, the Brazilian drug raid of course. It's all over the news, but you probably know that." he said, eyeing the stack of papers outside.
"Why are you here?"
"Did you have anything to do with the cartel that god raided?"
"I haven't been involved in the cartel since you killed my father." Marquilla said stuffily.
"What about the raise of a new cartel called… The Mala Noche?" he asked then added, "I shouldn't say new. It had obviously been underground for years now. It has come back up though, and you're obviously the one behind it."
"I assure you I'm not." Marquilla said, not breaking her stony gaze with Horatio, "I had heard that some old members had brought it back up, but I don't know who. If you want to take it out, go to Brazil. That's the only place they're operating… But oh wait, you can't do business in Brazil. You have no power there."
"And you do?"
"I do." she nodded, "If you go over there, shut down the cartel and if you kill anyone, or even harm a hair on any of their heads, I will have the government deal with you so quickly, you won't even be able to call one of your teammates to come bail you out first."
"I will try my very hardest to make sure you have no power over there either. I will fight you until I die."
"You killed my father, Horatio. Give me just a little bit here. Stop trying to make my life a living hell, because I have nothing to do with it anymore. I'm no longer in Brazil, or the cartel. I miss it, yes, but I'm not involved."
"How many people have you killed though? How many lives have you ruined?" Horatio inquired.
"Not as many as you."
"I'm going to ruin you, Marquilla. You and your cartel."
"It's not my cartel! I have the Fund, and that's all." Marquilla defended herself, "I'm not involved in the drugs, in the violence anymore."
"Well I know that you never actually did drugs-"
"I only supplied them." Marquilla finished.
Horatio smiled and said, "I want to get you out of the business. It's not good for you."
"I'm not in it." she said, "Now unless you have anything further to say, I think you should leave my God damned house."
"If you wish." Horatio said, not giving her another glance before he left.
"Hector!" Marquilla snapped. Her butler rushed over to her. Marquilla demanded worriedly, I need you to get Renaldo Gonzalez on the phone right now."
"Absolutely." Hector said, rushing out of the room to get her cell phone. He dialed the number and gave her the phone once Renaldo was on the line.
"Renaldo,"
"Marquilla, you sound upset." he said, "What's wrong."
"You need to keep the damn cartel under the ground for now." she demanded, many emotions including fear, distress and anger evident in her voice.
"We need to stop it?"
"No!" she exclaimed furiously, "Keep doing it, just don't let anyone know except the trusted clients! You need to make people understand that if they squeal, they will die! Keep a close eye on anyone you sell to. If anyone tells someone we're going on, you better kill them. I don't want to have to do it myself. If anyone has the intent of telling anyone, you kill them. Kill anyone if they are suspicious. And make it clear to everyone that if they let anything slip that we'll kill them. Tell them that Marquilla Riaz will rip them apart herself."
"Yeah, I get it. Make sure no one tells, makes sure their source is never revealed to anyone, stuff like that." he said, "Mar, I've been in this business for longer than you. I'm the only one of us originals living. I worked with your dad so much, I think I know everything you do, and more."
"You could never know more. My dad left everything to me, all the secrets in a file in his desk." Marquilla said, "Of course, that's now all in my office, but you get it."
"Yeah. Alright, well, Marquilla, I understand. I know what to do. I can't believe we've already been leaked."
"You gotta find out who did and kill him. That's a warning to all the others. Make sure it get out to our clients."
"I will. Gosh, you underestimate me!" he whined, "I know what to do, I know how to run it!"
"I just need to make sure. Caine came to my door."
"What were his intentions?" Renaldo asked.
"I don't know, but I didn't like them, whatever they were."
"Of course not. We don't like him." he said, "No one does. We're not supposed to."
"Of course not. You know, h thought he was all high and mighty, killing us off, but he was wrong. We're gonna take over."
"Mala Noche forever." Renaldo laughed.
"Mala Noche forever." Marquilla agreed.
"So anyways, I have everything under control out here."
"You better."
"Anything else?"
"No. Just… Keep things under wraps until I do what I'm supposed to. Until I kill Caine, we can't get big."
