Portugal= Gabriel
Femke= Belgium
Alucard= Romania
I see Brazil as the only girl in the Americas house, but she has more balls than the other men.
I will try to be more historically accurate.
This fic will be drabbles.
Doesn't it suck that I don´t own Hetalia? Well, life goes on.
#1- Waiting
Mariana da Silva or how she is called these days, Brazil, is having a very boring day.
Why? For starters, the royal Portuguese family had fled to her house because France was being an ass.
It's not that she disliked them or anything but Mari was used to the simple life…Now she is a colony and an Empire too. She doesn't like the other nations of South America and alternates between giving them cold stares or shivering in fear every time she saw them.
She does miss the simple days when as a young girl, she was entirely free and in tunr with nature. Ever since Portugal "found " her …the young woman has lost a part of her freedom but that doesn't bother her too much and often Mari wonders if it's due to her attachment for the older nation. Oh! Also, Carlota Joaquina, her princess and Dom Joao´s wife, have been a thorn in Mari's side for two reasons:
1] she is bored in Brazil, she loves to remind the Brazilian woman that Brazil will never be like Spain.
2] She is also a little jealousy of Mari talking with Dom Joao.
So today, the Spanish princess is reading a romance novel aloud to Mari in Spanish—not that even understands Spanish.
And it's not that she never tries to escape from those lectures and sessions of Spanish culture—oh, how Mari likes to be sassy—it's just …if she does that, Carlota will be after her.
"And what about the end, what did you think Mari?" Mari´s boss, still found this situation amusing and lifted an eyebrow at Mari who was still sitting lazily in a chair that almost looked like someone a bag of potatoes. She keeps the same expression on.
"Yes, lovely it gets better after listening to it fifty times; I mean this time, I could almost not fathom why Gisele did that, wow!" she clapped her hands as she gave a smirk.
Carlota gave her a stern look, clearly not happy with Mari´s tone.
"You weren´t paying attention? Oh …" She takes a deep breath, "I was trying to be nice to you!"
"Oh really? Let me know when you start."
"I know you are worried about Portugal fighting with France." That hit a nerve. Mariana doesn't like it when Gabriel goes off to war …and the fact that he was fighting to keep her made this extra weird for her. "For god's sake, I can protect myself!" She remembered saying to Portugal and his boss.
"You need to stop worrying …he will be home—I mean—Portugal will come back to this place safe and sound." After this statement, she moves towards the door. "I think you should wear a white dress if you have one. Gabriel will like it."
Mari watched her leave the room without any interest as she now looks to her window and thinks to herself, "I do have a dress you idiot…if you come back, Portugal, I will wear that stupid thing."
#2 - Flag
Mari was never fond of smoking having watching nations like Portugal, the Netherlands, Spain, and England smoking cigarettes. She was certain that her lips would never touch tobacco but like that old saying goes—never say never.
Mariana is smoking a cigarette as her boss begins to speak, "So begins the military dictatorship of Brazil, my beloved nation, you will see …it is for the better."
Mariana hasn't said a word as she just stares at her own flag, thinking to herself, "I don't think red suits me that much."
She continues to smoke her cigarette.
#3 - Friendship
Ever since Femke Larssom or the Kingdom of Belgium, got her independence, she has had a hard time making some nations acknowledge her. Netherland, her dear older brother, wasn't so happy with Belgium leaving him. She couldn´t be with Spain or Austria either; Belgium was on her own now.
Femke was with her boss attending a foreign relations visit with a nation called Brazil. If her memory didn´t fail, so she hides her sorrow and frustrations and puts a fake smile on. After all, she doesn't want to screw up anything in front of her boss.
She was expecting a boy or a man. Who she saw instead surprised her.
"Hi, I´m Brazil 'the yes I´m an empire and I not married or care about it' Brazil. It's nice to know other nation that is independent just like me." The other woman had short raven colored hair, mysterious green-blue eyes, and was wearing man clothes. She was speaking French as well.
Femke blinked a few times and recalls that Portugal gave independence to a colony in South America. Oh now, she remembers Spain saying something about Brazil. "Bruja …what my brother saw in her I will never know."
"You recognize that I´m independent?"
"Of course! We both struggled to get our independence, even though we've only met just now, I know we have some things in common …we are independent female nations and some countries don´t like that." The girl stops and scratches her neck, feeling a little embarrassed. "Well, that's just what I think."
Femke blinks and then she gaves her famous trademark—a cat-like smile. Belgium never saw someone as embarrassed and red as Romano.
"Well, if that's the case, we most likely have something else in common…like do you like sweeties?"
The woman just nods not really sure of what to do now since she has never talked with a female nation before especially because there are so little females nations around the world.
"Then we have something else in common! My name is Femke and yours?"
"Mariana"
"Mari, I think we are going to get along pretty well."
#4 - Partner in Crime
In a certain house there´s a woman wearing a Howgrats style uniform doing what looks like a magic ritual. If Argy saw it, he would say she was just cooking a typical dish. Without a care in the world, she tosses the items in the cauldron.
"Salut!" Says Alucard as he starts to drink a can of tomato juice—or what he calls tomato juice.
"Salut, Lulu." She uses his nickname, enjoying the sound as it rolls out of her mouth. In the same way Alucard likes to mimic her accent, so does she.
"What are you doing?"
"I´m making a potion."
"I can see that but for what?"
"To curse my enemies."
"England ranting about your Olympics again?"
"He was telling Portugal that my Olympics will be horrible and you know it will be classy as fuck but he is too much."
Alucard just smirks, showing his famous "fang smile". Arthur and Alucard are friends and they go to every meet of the "Magic Club". It's impossible to resist a prank pulled on Iggy.
"You know what would be funny to see?"
"Um, dinosaurs coming back to life?"
"Aside from that—Iggy sure hates coffee."
Mari turns to him and gives a sly smile. Alucard was eating a brioche and drinking his Tomato juice.
"Yeah, would be a shame indeed "
The next day, Arthur Kirkland discovered that all his teas had vanished without a trace.
#5 - Warm
It´s 1944; USA soldiers, together with Brazilian soldiers, are marching on Italy.
There´s one little problem, Brazil isn´t used to the cold and today is one of the coldest day in Italy's history.
Mariana, being Brazil just wants to ignored the cold—after all she, is a soldier but she really wasn´t used to the cold.
Mentally she is scowling at North Italy, Japan, Germany, and everyone else.
"When I get my hands on Feliciano and Ludwig…I will kill them." she thought as she imagined strangling them.
USA, also known as Alfred Jones, sees Mariana shivering from the cold. He also realizes she was trying really hard to cover up her shivering.
He takes his jacket off and gives to her. In the back of his mind he could hear a mocking voice with a British accent saying, "Just like a gentleman."
"Huh?" Brazil is surprised by the gesture.
Alfred looks serious for once. The American boy used to smile and say some funny or dumb things but ever since WWII started ...He hasn't been the same.
"You´re cold, take it." Mari puts the jacket on. Alfred says, "I´m sorry you got dragged into this war…"
"Well …It's fine...It is a world war…It effects everyone."
Alfred zipped his jacket up on the Brazilian woman.
"Your soldiers aren´t used to the cold though…You will be not be very useful to the this war if you become a Popsicle." He jokes a little like his old self. "If you need some help… just say so...I got you into this war. So I might as well help you and your soldiers with heavier uniforms."
Mariana smiles and she punches his left arm rather playfully. Mentally she is pretty happy that her arms aren´t frozen solid.
"Thanks man and you didn´t force me to do anything. I choose to fight. I just regret not knowing it would be so cold here."
Alfred holds her, smiling for the first time since they arrive in Italy.
"I´m glad we are allies." Alfred still resents England a little for not warning him about the attack on Pearl Harbor…Alfred lost so many men in that day. If only England had warned him.…
Suddenly Brazil feels a little warmer.
#6 - Girl Club
The Republic Federative of Brazil can say she isn't a coward nor she is a bully—well she already apologized to Uruguay and she has no idea why Ecuador is so scared of her. But everyone has a weakness.
Multiple pairs of eyes stare intensely at Mari. The poor Brazilian woman is wearing short jeans and a black shirt saying "Ola,sou do Brasil e nao falo espanhol".
"Hm."
The eyes belong to the female nations; all of the female nations in the world are staring at Mari. Now, even through Brazil is a female, Mariana was raised by men all her life. She has a strong friendship with Belgium and it took a while for Mari to be comfortable around someone so feminine.
"So what´s your answer Brazil?" asks Vietnam with a book in her hand and a serious expression on her face. Mari figures that Vietnam should probably take a "How to Smile" class with Thailand.
"But…why me?"
"дзеля любові да Бога just accepted already" says Belarus who is impatiently staring at Mariana with her infamous ice glare; it does not work on Mariana. Usually the Brazilian would say something like "Bela, you are so cute when you do that …look who is trying to be all scary!" Which usually earned her more icy glares and sassier come backs—the circle of life.
"Um, I guess."
"Great! Now it is official; the Female Nation Club is complete." says Hungary while Czechoslovakia gives an apologetic smile; she knows that Mari is a huge tomboy and isn't very good at interacting with a large group of women.
Liechtenstein hands her a white ribbon to match Mari's raven hair.
"Well, it's not like I have choice, right?"
"NO!" they all say, smiling in satisfaction while Mari just gulps.
"Oh, what I gotten myself into?" she moans quietly.
#7 - Movies
Ever since the 50´s, Mariana has grown to love the cinema (never mind how hard it was to make her own movies with all the protests and struggles Brazil has had to face over the years.
But that's in the past now. At the moment Mari is watching a movie with ?
Ludwig deserved a break from holding together the Europian financial crisis and they both like movies and it is nice to chat about something that isn´t troubles and problems.
"Hey Luddy, I got the movie, 'O Palhaço', and I can´t believe it's competing for an Oscar."
Ludwig hopes that no one—namely Feliciano—gets into the habit of calling him "Luddy".
Ludwig drink his beer while Mari drinks her coffee which is sacred to her she once said to Ludwig.
Unknown to them, a certain pair of red eyes and brown eyes stare at the two.
Feliciano isn´t amused while Gilbert is proud of his little brother.
#8 - This is War
In Czechia in a typical house in Praga, the capital, there´s a discussion about something very important.
" Mari, Elizaveth and I were as big of tomboys as you."
"Ok."
"No darling, you don´t understand. We didn´t like Austria very much. It's more like a love-hate kind of thing."
"I believe you."
"Also, the thing I have to put it on WWII "
"I know."
"And Liechtenstein, don´t let that cute face mislead you, she knows how to hold grudges."
"Hm."
"Also there´s the crisis in Europe and the Euro Copa…I didn't win, why is it always Spain?"
Czech, a brunette that likes to wear a white scarf, turns to Mari, wanting an answer
"Um…Bohemia?" she offers a beer to Czechia.
"Sure, thanks. So what about you?"
#9 - Cheers
Both Ukraine and Brazil are cheering for Portugal although Ukraine can sure be a monster when Canada is the one playing. Mari pities the fool that dares to say anything bad about her Canadian boyfriend.
It's the match between Portugal and Spain. The Brazilian woman wants to see Portugal win. She so does not blush when the older nation says she is his lucky charm.
At the end of the match, Portugal didn´t win through it was a good game. Next up is Italy. Mari isn´t sure if they can defeat Spain but hey, they defeated Germany.
Mari goes to Portugal—again, she doesn't blush when she sees him shirtless—and without thinking she hugs him.
"Gabriel that was a good game!" she said with her face painted with his flag's color, not really minding the sweat covering his body.
Gabriel cracks a smile even though he is totally exhausted and covered in sweat.
"Nah, today wasn't my day but I ripped that smile off his damn face." Gabriel says without any real malice. The Iberian brothers like to compete with each other but at the same time both like to cheer for the other.
Mari just stares at him and then at Spain. Antonio glares at Mari…they don´t like each other.
"Hm...I should have ask Felipão to be my coach."
"So you are finally acknowledging that I'm the best at futebol?"
Gabriel just laughs as he lets go of Mari and watches his player interact with one of Antonio´s players.
"You aren´t so bad at futebol, Mari."
"Just you wait...in the Copa of 2014, I will win…and I will defeat Spain! I will make him eat dirt!"
"Whatever you say Mari."
#10 - Reunions
As Mari looks at England, France, and the USA bickering with each other like always, she just sighs.
As she watches North Italy scream "Pasta!" in the meeting, she only sighs.
As Germany yells at everyone to be quiet or when Japan agrees to everything the USA said causing Switzerland to yell, "EXPRESS YOUR OWN OPINIONS, JAPAN!", she only sighs.
When Russia started scaring Lithuania, Estonia, and Belarus, the meeting was finished and all the other countries pack their belongings and headed to the exit.
Mari stares at China.
"Are they always like that?"
"Yes, aru, and they never resolve any problems."
"Gee, thanks for putting me here, China."
"You're welcome, aru."
#11 - Skin
"Are you sure you don´t want to wear any make-up?" asks one of the bosses that was sent to look after her like she is just a hopeless girl.
Mariana looking unfazed by this whole thing just stares at the make-up. It is the same make-up that Europeans persofications wear to hide their black absolutely bullshit
"You will cause problems, I mean, you aren´t white or black."The man said tentatively, hoping Mari would accept. Mari just looks at him calmly, hiding her underlying thoughts.
Finally, she looks away from said man and looks carefully at her arm noticing her hands. "Did my hands get bigger or is just me?" she thinks as memories of her childhood begin to cloud her mind. "Well it never made difference then if my hands were small, so I don´t think it makes a difference now if they are bigger..."
"Cafe com leite"
"Excuse me?"
"If the color of my skin will cause so much havoc," she said, the last part with irony, "Then I will say that the color of my skin is 'cafe com leite'. So I won´t be needing make-up to hide my skin...because, if I use this make-up then, you will have to say that your country is ashamed of her looks and that will reflect on you too."
"But the female nations of Europe-"
"My good sir, you aren´t in Europe and I´m certainly not a European nation so this is pointless."
"But the slaves..."
"Yes, I know that...The slaves that Portugal buys along with Netherlands and England ...Slavery is something that has existed for centuries." An image of her tribes enslaving other tribes or killing them flashed before her mind. It's complicated but she can´t be mad at her people for doing something like that. "So I guess the world will have to get used to a South American female nation with 'cafe com leite' skin. Good day, sir." She breaks away leaving the man behind.
"Should I have mentioned that Portugal doesn't have light skin either?" she mused to herself.
OK, here we go to the explanations:
1] When the royal Portuguese family came to Brazil it elevated the title of Brazil to Empire. Dom Joao broughtt many books and built the first library. The country had many names before Brazil-even in her dictatorship era.
Anyway, as for Carlota Joaquina, she didn´t like Brazil very much; there´s many reports that she called it "the boondocks".
We made a stereotype that Carlota is a TPMzilla but actually she is a very intelligent woman who loves Spain and love Dom Joao.
When I say love, it means that have somewhat OK marriage; when he died she became so shaken that she spent all of her money in prayers for him. Also I'm comparing their marriage to others such as those of the Spanish princes who have not-so-nice marriages...
I made Carlota not like Mari because of historical reasons.
Portugal was fighting against France at that time and he won. France tried to invade Portugal three times and 3 TIMES IT WAS AN EPIC FAILURE.
2] On this one, I mention the first dictatorship-the Coup of 1968 (or golpe de 1968), Mari´s dictatorship last for three centuries.
The blood that Mari refers to is based on a TV show that uses that metaphor.
3] I think this one is a piece of shit but basically I wanted to show how Belgium and Brazil became friends.
Historically both nations recognize each other as independent. Both achieved independency in the same year, 1888.
My headcannon is that Bel-Bel is lady-like but as she has to deal with many shitty situations, she wants to say what she really think but she can´t ... Mari does this easily.
And Mari admires Bel-Bel´s femininity and chocolate.
This friendship is very interesting.
Bel-Bel even was in favor of Brazil in the dispute between Brazil versus the lost cause. Iggy wanted Mari to pay for all the ships she sink, but he was the one that started the fight with her in the first place... I'm summing it up of course-so the kin of Belgium declares Brazil the winner and then she doesn´t have to pay to Iggy.
Bruja=witch
4] Romania and Brazil are friends just like the friendship with Bel-Bel; it started at the time where Brazil was an empire.
Well in Rio de Janeiro, we have a Romanian embassy and Romania has a Brazilian embassy. Bel-Bel´s embassy is in Sao Paulo.
Um... both countries like scary stories—Oh! How we like a good creepy pasta!
I like to think that Romania and Mari would be mischievous and prank Iggy just for fun.
Somehow, I think Alucard (NO,THIS HAS TO BE HIS NAME ,SORRY ,I DON´T RECONIZE ANY OTHER NAME FOR HIM) doesn't like Iggy very much—cough—portrays his hero as a monster-cough—but since they are in the magic club together...
And Iggy likes to bad mouth Brazil about her Olympics in 2016...Someone is jelly.
5] In 1944, Brazilian soldiers are hiking in North Italy along with USA soldiers. They lent some of their clothes to the Brazilian soldiers.
WE DID FIGHT IN THE TWO WORLD WARS!
As for Pearl Harbor, I read and saw a documentary saying that it could have been avoided if someone had warned the USA—cough—Iggy but he wanted the USA to join the war ...so yeah, he also spread to USA that Belgium was "raped". He overreacted on this but I guess it was for a good cause in the end.
Oh, Mari did face Germany, Italy, and Japan...She won—Germany wanted to make Brazil one of the Axis but she said no.
6] This one is for pure fun. I created Mariana to be a huge tomboy and to be a bit awkward around girls (this has nothing to do with her sexuality). She sort of has an inferiority complex but at the same time she doesn't want to change herself.
I guess she just has to fully accept who she is.
And she gets that way because everyone keeps comparing her to the female European nations.
Headcannon : all the girls in Hetalia have a ribbon that matches with them; it was Liechtenstein's idea.
Belarus, Monaco, Seycheles, Vietnam, Taiwan, and Hungary are friends (Ukraine too).
дзеля любові да Бога =for the love of God
"Ola, sou do Brasil e nao falo espanhol" = Hi, I come from Brazil; no I don´t speak Spanish.
7] I ship Brazil x Germany-no, I don´t think that every German is a Nazi especially not the ones who immigrated to Brazil.
Ok, the movie mentioned, The Clown "O Palhaço", did compete for an Oscar 2010 but it didn´t won
And when Brazil´s protesting began, the first nation that supported Mari was...Germany
OK, sorry gerita fans but I think this ship is too cute to hate.
8] I love Cadasko's idea of Czechia (Brazil and Czechia are friends ...Jucelino Kubitsheck was Brazilian and Czech).
Well, Czech was under Austro-Hungarian rule and she did rebel against them every chance she got it.
Yes, Czech and Liechtenstein did have a grudge; Liechtenstein believed that Czech stole some lands from her.
9] Euro Copa 2012-Spain X Portugal played ...it was a good game.
Ukraine cheers for Portugal (but I ship Canukr) and Brazil always cheers for Portugal; the only copa Portugal won was with a Brazilian coach, Felipe Scollari...O FELIPÃO!
BUT MARI WON AGAISNT SPAIN 3X0
TAKE THAT SPAIN
Yes, Spain doesn´t like Brazil and vice versa. Iggy is mean to her sometimes and France too. Spain has gotten BEAT DOWN SO MANY TIMES IN THE PAST BY HER...IT'S NOT EVEN FUNNY.
10] Well this one is based on China being one Brazil´s biggest allies economically. He has supported Brazil being in ONU since the 90´s.
That´s why.
11] Well cafe com leite= coffee with milk. It's Brazilian slang that means "you are neutra ". Mari´s skin is that color.
Which means she is neutral.
But in Brazil they had more indigenous slavery than black slavery. Slavery existed for centuries but Mari never liked it yet she always felt conflicted because they are her people. She can´t be mad but she doesn´t support it.
THE TOP 4 EUROPEAN NATIONS THAT GAINED THE MOST MONEY WITH SLAVERY:
ENGLAND (IRONICALLY HE GAINED MONEY WITH SLAVERY AND HE WAS THE FISRT THAT ENDED BUT NOT FOR THE GOOD OF HIS HEART ...FOR MONEY)
PORTUGAL(HE WAS ONE OF THE FIRST THAT ENDED IT)
NETHERLANDS
SPAIN
BRAZIL HAS SOME REGIONS THAT ENDED SLAVERY FOR GOOD, BUT OFICIALLY SLAVERY ENDED WITH "LEI AUREA" IN 1888.
