Author's Note:

Guess who's still alive! *throws confetti*

For those who have been with this story from the beginning, I apologize for being so inactive and neglecting this story. As most of you know, I was in the process of rewriting everything in order to make the story better, and hopefully, make the flow smoother. Since I was in the process of rewriting the story, I also made some changes to the plot and my original characters, which will be further explained in my ending notes along with some translations of French phrases.

Here are some things to keep note of before reading:

1.) Since the story mostly takes place in Japan, I will refer to the heroine by her Japanese name, Tomoyo. With her mother and French relatives, she will be referred to as Diana.

2.) Also to note, this chapter takes place roughly around the time of the school festival which is chapter 25 in the manga.

3.) Bold speech = French

4.) Plain speech = Japanese

5.) Italics = thoughts and/or flashbacks

Disclaimer: I do not own Ouran High School Host Club, all rights belong to Bisco Hattori. However, original characters and events that don't belong to the anime/manga are mine.

Chapter One

"Joyeux anniversaire, Diana!" Anne sings, watching her daughter grin before the younger de Grantaine closes her eyes. It only takes a few seconds for Diana to make her wish, blowing out the candles in front of her as her mother comes over to give her a peck on the cheek.

"Je vous souhaite plein de bonheur en cette journée spéciale, ma fille," Anne whispers, cupping her child's face in her hands before moving back to let her relatives give their blessings. The blonde watches her parents, Catherine and Lawrence, and her brother, Noel, smother Diana with hugs and kisses before there is a knock at the door.

It is almost as if everyone in the de Grantaine mansion is aware of the sudden guest and the laughter has dwindled down to curiosity, wondering who would visit at such an hour. A feeling of dread comes over Anne when she looks through the peephole and cautiously opens the door to reveal an elderly woman in a kimono, her dark grey hair pulled back into a low bun. Calculating eyes glance at her son's lover before wandering to the fifteen year old sitting at the head of the table.

Diana holds a breath when she realizes that it is her grandmother who has visited. The chocolate chiffon cake lays untouched as everyone watches Shizue Suoh make her way to the table, stopping just at the other end opposite to Diana. The birthday girl quickly bows in greeting and Diana can only tug at her ash brown hair when Shizue gestures for her to finally sit down, running her hands through it in order to keep her anxiety from showing on her face. She feels a little bit more at ease when Catherine places a hand on top of her head as Lawrence and Noel stand next to her mother.

"Happy birthday, Tomoyo," Shizue says, no warmth behind those words as she resumes to keep her lips in a tight line. Diana is quick to bite her tongue from correcting her only paternal grandparent and nods her head in acknowledgement. Diana stares at Shizue in disinterest, careful not to stare too hard that she's glaring at the Suoh head, but it seems that her mother has no qualms about that.

"Diana…it's Diana while you are in France, Shizue-san," Anne corrects, moving closer to her daughter to stand next to her chair and pasting on a fake smile with a mock bow as she faces her lover's mother. "What brought you to come grace us with your presence today?"

The look Shizue gives her mother makes Diana nervous. She has never seen her paternal grandmother and her mother fight before but from the stories Shima and her father told her, it can get pretty nasty. "I thought I should come early to give the news in person," Shizue starts, "Tomoyo is to return to Japan after she turns sixteen."

"She is to what?!" Anne yells, almost flipping the table in the process if not for Catherine's grip on her arm. "You have ordered for her to come here when she was fourteen and now you are telling her to return—"

A hand from Shizue stops Anne from continuing and Diana gives up her seat for her mother before handing her a glass of water, hoping to calm her mother down from clawing at the elderly woman. The sudden news of her return to Japan did not bode well since that meant both of her children are going to be in Japan and away from her. Anne quietly rubs her temples in circles before glaring at Shizue.

"You are not bringing Diana back to Japan with you," Anne finishes, standing up once more. The fatigue of the whole situation is making it hard to stand but she refuses to look weak in front of the Suoh head. Said head only gazes at her emotionless, a hint of dismay and pity dancing in her pupils.

"You were inadequate to care for Tamaki and it seems that you are also unable to care for Tomoyo fully in your condition," Shizue mutters, getting annoyed when she notices the glares coming from Anne's parents. Reaching into her sleeves, Shizue pulls out a manila envelope and slides it across the table. "Her flight is stated here."

Everyone is silent as Diana takes it and opens it. She reaches inside for what looks like her plane ticket and she sighs upon reading the date of her flight. November of next year…? Isn't that around the time of the annual Ouran festival? Diana thought as she recalled the festivals she would hear about from her father. As someone who is trying to hide from the limelight, it was better for Diana to join the public elementary and middle schools in Japan and not be anywhere near Ouran.

"Will you be alright, biche?" Lawrence asks. He takes the ticket from his granddaughter's hand and gently looks over the date.

"I am…for now at least, pépé," Diana says, continuing in playing with her hair as her grandmother comes over to hug her.

"Do not worry about anything right now, biche," Catherine whispers. Diana can only smile reassuringly at her maternal grandparents, hoping that they cannot see the strain behind it. They do.

"This is also from your father," Shizue states and pulls out a small box from her sleeves. She sets it down on the table for Diana to take before moving towards the door. "I will see you in nineteen months, Tomoyo."

Diana waits until her grandmother shows herself the way out before opening the present. She finds a post-it lying next to a thin watch and decides to read the post-it first.

Joyeux anniversaire, mon trésor, I trust your grandmother did not cause too much trouble during her visit. You have every right to be mad at the moment, but I do hope you will forgive her. She means well even when she does not express it.

I hope you and ma chérie are doing well! Tamaki is doing great; he's made quite a few interesting friends here in Japan. To answer your question, no, he does not know about you yet. Your grandmother would like to keep that a secret for as long as she likes.

Anyways, the watch is from when I went on my business trip to Germany! I'll come and visit as soon as I can!

Yours truly, Papa

Diana smiles a little and picks up the watch from the box, putting it on as she raises her arm to look at it. "A beautiful watch for a beautiful girl," Anne whispers, her hands resting on her daughter's shoulders. She ignores the burning feeling behind her eyes as she smiles down at Diana in adoration when the fourteen year old glances at her silently.

A grin breaks out on the brunette's face before turning to look down at the watch. Its straps were made from adjustable brown leather and gold accents decorated the face of the watch. She had to agree with her mother, it definitely was beautiful.

"May she be blessed with happiness no matter what comes her way," Noel said, voicing the thought that everyone was thinking as he fondly looks over at his niece.

"We should probably cut the cake now," Lawrence suggests, getting the forks and plates ready. "Diana, Diana, Diana…!"

"…Tomoyo-sama, Tomoyo-sama, please wake up!"

Tomoyo shoots upright in her bed with a gasp. She frantically looks around at the unfamiliar walls until she catches sight of a huge painting of herself in a kimono on the wall perpendicular to her bed. Japan, the brunette faintly recalls. I'm in Japan.

"Nice to see you join us, Tomoyo-hime," Shima deadpans, amusement flickering in her eyes when Tomoyo makes a face at the hime-honorific. "Have you adjusted to living in the main mansion yet?"

"Good morning to you too, Shima baa-san," Tomoyo snorts, swinging her legs over the bed before standing, "And to be quite honest, I'm just surprised that grandmother wants me here."

The brunette stops to undress herself from her pajamas, giving them to Shima to take. The elderly woman chooses to stay silent as she follows the youngest Suoh to the closet, the sixteen-year-old clad in her underwear. "I thought she hated me," Tomoyo mumbles, rummaging through her clothes for something decent to wear.

"You know that is not true, Tomoyo-sama," Shizue says, picking out a blush open-shoulder top and some black jeans when she sees the brunette struggle. The elderly woman does not elaborate and instead, she gently guides Tomoyo to the private bathroom and hands her the clothes. "Please try not to take too long. I need to go and wake Tamaki-sama now."

No promises, Tomoyo thinks as her bedroom door closes, choosing to save questions about Tamaki for later, and takes a look at the bath before realizing that it has already been drawn. The scent of lavender fills the air and Tomoyo eyes the bag of purple bath salt near the sink. Shrugging to herself, she sticks her hand into the bath to check the temperature before settling in it, the lilac colored water moving with her weight. She sinks even deeper until it reaches her neck and glances at the pieces of clothes Shima had picked out. The brunette could not help but think that they were a little too formal to wear at home, but she shrugs to herself, thinking it was because she would see Shizue at the table later.

At the thought of her grandmother, Tomoyo groans and sinks even lower into the bath until her head is submerged. She still has no idea why her grandmother had her return so quickly, especially since Shizue was so adamant about keeping the twins from finding out about one another. The only reason Tomoyo found out was because she discovered an album dedicated to René in the dusty attic of the de Grantaine mansion one summer, and the baby pictures inside were definitely not her.

Coming up for air, Tomoyo watches the lilac water swish around with a frown. She also hasn't figured out why she and Tamaki can't know about the other. Isn't it much more troublesome to constantly make sure the press doesn't know about me? Tomoyo thought. She shrugs half-heartedly, not wanting to dwell on it too much before standing up from the tub, carefully making her way to the shower head after draining the bath. She suddenly becomes aware of the theme going on as she peers down at the matching lavender scented bar of soap and shampoo with a smile. I'm probably going to be sick of lavender by the end of this week, Tomoyo thought humouredly, scrubbing down her body with the soap before moving to add shampoo into her hair. The scent of lavender lingers around leaving Tomoyo to be content with how the bath went.

She sighs as she looks at the folded towels, puffing in mortification that her name has been sewn into every one, 'Diana Tomoyo Jolie de Grantaine Suoh' stitched in black thread. She squints as her gaze shifts to the small tag at the end of the towel.

"Hitachiin Fashions, huh?" Tomoyo mumbled to herself, racking her brain for any information on the company only to draw up with a blank. The brunette is sure that it's a fairly huge enterprise if they're in the main mansion or that her father was friends with the people in charge of Hitachiin Fashions. Shrugging, Tomoyo dries herself quickly, wrapping her hair with a towel.

"Tomoyo-sama, are you dressed?" Shima asks from the other side of the door.

"Almost," Tomoyo says, putting on the jeans and top as she exits the bathroom. "So where am I going today exactly? I wouldn't really be wearing something like this if I was staying inside all day."

"Did you really forget?" Shima asks, gesturing for two maids to enter. They were carrying makeup and a diffuser, making Tomoyo cringe at the prospect of having her face done. "You were so excited to go to the annual Ouran festival too."

The sixteen year old does a double take at the elderly woman in surprise as the two maids guide her towards the table mirror. "Wait, you were serious? I thought you were joking."

"I didn't know I was capable of joking, Tomoyo-sama," Shima deadpans, watching from the sidelines as one of the maids started drying her hair. "Your father is waiting in his office at Ouran Academy; his assistant will be there to pick you up at the gates."

Tomoyo nods as she looks at Shima in the mirror, not wanting to move her head too much with her hair being dried. She watches her hair take its natural shape, ash brown waves flowing down to her mid back as the maid adds a bit of oil for some shine. The other maid has then moved on to putting make up on Tomoyo, filling in her eyebrows in the sparse areas as well as adding some contour on her nose. The brunette tries not to blink when the eyelash curler and mascara are put on as well.

"Do you have any preference, Tomoyo-sama?" The maid in charge of her makeup had asked, gesturing to the array of lipstick colors in display. The sixteen year old snorts at the obvious growing collection of makeup despite remembering that she only had mascara and lip tint at one point, but chooses a lipstick color anyway.

"Thank you," Tomoyo smiles as the two maids step back, admiring their finished work. She touched her lipstick, which she now knew as the color Lolita II, and made sure that there wasn't any excess.

"Whenever you are ready, Tomoyo-sama," Shima inquires, prompting for Tomoyo to stand up from her seat to collect her cross body bag and phone.

The way to the dining room is quiet as every employee in the mansion keeps their heads bowed whenever Tomoyo passes by. She flinches at the scene but endures it, making a mental note that this is normal, something she dealt with for fourteen years before leaving. When they finally make it, Tomoyo is greeted by the sight of plates full of waffles, bacon, sausage, eggs, toast, and croquettes being placed on the table. Glasses were filled with different types of juices to choose from. Tomoyo's mouth starts to salivate at the sight, her stomach growling louder with each passing second.

"You'll be late if you keep standing there drooling, Tomoyo-sama," Shima says as she walks past the youngest Suoh. The elderly woman smirks when she hears a chair being dragged over as Tomoyo starts filling her plate with a little of everything.

It didn't take long before the brunette started feeling full, half of the food that was placed already gone as Tomoyo drank her last glass of juice for the day. She was suddenly glad her jeans weren't high rise or else her stomach would have hurt. Yawning a bit as she rubs her belly, she stands up towards the door with her cross bag and phone in hand.

"Are you ready, Tomoyo-sama?" Shima asks by the door, handing Tomoyo a jacket.

"More than I'll ever be," Tomoyo replies, smiling at the maids who stood by Shima's side. The elderly woman nods as she opens the door for her, watching as a black limo pulls over to the front and then the brunette was off.

Pictures from the internet did not do the academy justice on how pink it was. Tomoyo resisted the urge to flinch at how bright it looked, choosing to keep those thoughts away as she got closer to the facility.

"Tomoyo-sama, we have arrived," Daichi said, pulling over to the gate. Tomoyo could barely focus on what Daichi said as she looks around for an assistant but she manages an easy smile towards the driver.

"Thank you, Daichi-san. I'll give you a call when I finish!" Tomoyo waves as she gets out of the limo and strides towards a woman in a dark suit.

"Tomoyo Suoh?" The lady inquires, although she already knew the answer. "I'm Ayumi Mizuhara, if you would follow me, we'll be stopping by your father's office now."

For a festival taking place that day, the corridor was oddly quiet and empty and Tomoyo was not sure what unnerved her more. Seeing the uncomfortable expression on Tomoyo's face, Ayumi chuckles, "You haven't noticed? It is 7:17am right now; an official school day won't start until 8:30am."

"What time does the festival start then?" Tomoyo asks, looking through the windows and classrooms, discovering that most have been set up already.

"If I'm not wrong, it should start at 9:00am and will go on until the evening," Ayumi explained, passing through twists and turns as Tomoyo follows. "While most parents work in the mornings, they usually decide to take a day off just to visit the festival."

Tomoyo nods and she keeps silent, wondering why parents would need to take a day off just to see the festival. Back in her middle school, most classrooms would set up booths and events for other students to enjoy while a few may take up some plays to perform. It took a while for Tomoyo to realize but Ouran is a place of heirs that would one day take over a company. Annual festivals were a way for parents to check on their child's progress.

"We're here," Ayumi announced and Tomoyo flinches out of her thoughts. She looks up at the name plate above the doors, the words 'chairman's office printed in cursive.

"Took you long enough," Yuzuru sighed playfully as he looked towards his daughter. Her face contorted into a grin, one that was oh too similar to a certain someone—who just happens to be Tamaki. Yuzuru bit down the chuckle that was forming in his throat and immediately tosses a bag towards the younger brunette. The youngest Suoh stays silent as she waits for Yuzuru to continue, itching to look inside the bag. "If I'm to be completely honest with you, you're not even supposed to be here right now."

Tomoyo blanches but she lets her father continue. "But since you will be attending Ouran academy, the festival should be a great chance to explore the school and memorize your way inside. As far as I know, mother wanted you back and attending Ouran Academy as Diana Tomoyo Jolie. Not as a Suoh or de Grantaine."

"Fair enough, I used that name in elementary and middle school so it shouldn't be a problem," Tomoyo shrugged, knowing that the fact that she is a Suoh will need to be kept a secret. Unwanted publicity will only lead to disaster. "But wouldn't this risk Tamaki discovering about me if I'm in the same school? A twin sister he never knew or heard about for the last sixteen years."

"If that happens, that's your grandmother's problem," Yuzuru laughed, intertwining his fingers in front of him. "That's what the bag is for."

At her raised eyebrow, Tomoyo opens the bag to see a yellow uniform along with some dress shoes and tights, but what caught her eye was a packet of colored contacts and a dark chocolate colored hair dye sitting on top of the folded uniform. They were a vibrant green color when Tomoyo peeked inside the contact pact, already guessing the answer as to why.

"Wait, so you want me to basically disguise myself for the festival?" Tomoyo asks.

"Orders from mother, what better way to keep your identity hidden by changing your appearance? Plus, your grandmother wouldn't recognize you from afar (I hope) since I ordered the hair dye and contacts myself," Yuzuru shrugs, grinning at his daughter's blank face. "It will be fun…maybe."

At Tomoyo's eye roll, Yuzuru gestures for Ayumi to take over from there as the older woman gently leads Tomoyo to an impromptu changing room. "Come on, Tomoyo-sama, I'll help you dye your hair."

Ending Notes:

(4) Pépé = grandpa

(5) Mon trésor = my treasure

(6) Ma chérie = my dear/darling

I had to do some research concerning French and this will probably be the only chapter where there are so many phrases in French, there will be French words here and there but they would most likely be nicknames.

As promised, here are the changes in the story compared to the first draft:

1.) Originally, the heroine was named Dianne Aiko Noel de Grantaine Suoh. Her name now is pretty similar but instead, it is Diana Tomoyo Jolie de Grantaine Suoh.

2.) I happen to also add more original characters concerning Anne-Sophie's blood relatives. Tomoyo's maternal grandparents are Catherine and Lawrence, while her maternal uncle is Noel. This is why I changed her name from Dianne Aiko Noel de Grantaine Suoh to Diana Tomoyo Jolie de Grantaine Suoh to avoid any confusion.

3.) From birth to the age of fourteen, Tomoyo has been raised by her father in Japan until Shizue decided to switch Tamaki and Tomoyo at the age of fourteen. She's been living in the de Grantaine mansion for two and a half years before Shizue decided to bring her back for reasons unknown.

4.) Tomoyo has known about her twin brother for a while now. It will be revealed how long she knew as the story progresses.
