I've decided I just had to do this scene. It's sort of a mix between the movies and the book.

Diana Barry was probably the very essence of perfection. A nice, oval face with a rose-petal complexion, dark brown eyes, and wonderful, cascading black curls. But, that was only counting her looks—Diana was a loyal friend, and had such an amiable personality she was quite fun to be with.
And of course, of course, Diana, when angered, was a skillful opponent in argument, but was willing to forgive if her opponent was worthy of forgiveness, and, if not, Diana would probably forgive them anyway.
Yes, Diana Barry was perfectly lady-like, beautiful, and polite. And at that very moment, Miss Perfection Barry was chasing after a cow in Mr. Harrison's muddy field. Or rather, chasing after Anne Shirley who was casing after the Jersey cow.
"Anne Shirley!" shrieked Diana, who eyed the field distrustfully. She flicked her eyes back to the back of her friend. "You'll ruin your dress chasing after that cow!" she called, "Ruin it!" Diana finished a bit lamely.
Anne looked over her shoulder and called back, "I don't care about my dress, Diana! If Mr. Harrison sees Dolly in this field…Ooh!"
Diana sighed, exasperated. She muttered to herself: "She'll never get that cow out of here all by herself. I suppose I must go help her." And with that Diana straightened her back, held her head high, and promptly began running like the devil, raven ringlets bouncing behind her. With her long legs, Diana soon overtook Anne, and, by a random whim, Diana happened to look over her shoulder at the damage of the field and nearly fainted.
It was then she began fervently wishing a very unchristian thought—please, oh please, Mr. Harrison fall ill today.
Soon, between the two of them, Anne and Diana corned the Jersey cow against the fence the separated Mr. Harrison's field from Green Gables. "Diana, if you get the gap, and come straight at her, perhaps Dolly will jump the fence. It's the best we can hope for." Anne instructed, picking up a branch and holding it in front of her.
Diana trudged to 'the gap', and replied a bit sardonically, "I got the gap." She watched as Anne—who every second was proving to Diana to be not quite as sane as she thought. Chasing after a cow—Indeed! It was then Diana heard a rather big Spoolsh. Anne fell…fell, into the mud.
Picking herself up with flawless grace, Anne studied her now dirtied dress and hands with a sort of silent shock. Diana rushed over to her friend's side, and apparently, that spot was a very sort of unlucky spot where it's impossible to not fall or trip. This was no exception. Diana stood up, staring at her once white, lacey, gown that had become most…red. They heard a laugh from their left. It was Mr. Shearer.
Jersey cows were most decidedly not worth it, Diana thought as Anne sold the cow. Diana almost didn't care about what Marilla would think of Anne. Nor did Diana remind Anne not to act impulsively. All Diana needed to replenish her bitterness for the cow was glance at her dress.
Meanwhile, the Jersey cow merely blinked at Diana in her confused, clueless way. Diana pursed her lips and raised her eyebrows.
Cows.
