A/N: This was inspired by a gifset by pawprintsandsnowflakes on Tumblr. I originally posted it as a reponse, but I thought I ought to make it a bit more formal and post it here as well. Enjoy. As always, critical reviews are more than welcome.
Her dreams were filled with images of him, laughing and playing games beneath a blue summer sky. Memories of the fun they once had occupied her waking thoughts. Her heart held hope, hope that by some miracle he would live again. And her eyes, that night, if even for the briefest time, held the most joyful, awestruck wonder a child could ever know.
"Jack?"
The newly birthed frost spirit jumped in surprise at a voice. Ungracefully he dropped out of the air and onto the ice, feet slipping this way and that, arms flailing as he tried to balance himself out. Once he found his grounding, his blue eyes looked up from the lake to see a young girl staring at him with the brightest brown eyes. She smiled from ear to ear, but something faltered and a hint of doubt came over her features.
"W-what?" he stumbled out, trying to make sense of what was happing.
Her smile returned in full when he spoke. "Jack!" she cried out again with glee, rushing forward. She seemed to be about to run full force onto the lake when she abruptly pulled short just by the shore, her expression something akin to caution. However her demeanor did not change. She still beamed with happiness. "You're alive! You're alive! You're alive!" she repeated, jumping up and down excitedly. "I knew you would be okay!" She suddenly stopped and frowned and then she breathed out in near disbelief. "You're eyes are blue. Not just your hair. You're eyes are-"
At this point the frost spirit cut in, confusion written across is face. "Wait. Wait. You… you know me?"
"Of course I-" she stopped, eyes widening. "J-jack?"
Something inside of him responded to the name. He could not explain why, but it felt right, like it belonged to him in some way. Jack. He was Jack. Carefully he responded. "Yeah. That's me. Jack. What's your name?"
The girl laughed as if he said some silly joke. "You know my name."
He frowned. "I do?"
And just like that her laughter died, replaced by worry and fearful hesitance. "Don't be like that, Jack," she said. "You… you do know my name… right?"
"No?" he said almost questioningly, like he was unsure of whether he should know it or not.
Jack would never forget the look on the face of that girl that moonlit night. It was a look of pain, the hurt of a forgotten, lonely, grieving child. After a long silence of tears falling from her downcast eyes, she spoke. "Miracles don't happen" she whispered hopelessly. And when she looked back up to the frozen lake, she saw nothing but frost upon the ice.
