Deep in the Meadow
The girl sits on the grass, watching her younger brother play in the grass. Normally she would join in but she needed time alone to think about what she had learned in school- what she had learned about her parents. She knew that they had taken part in the Hunger Games but she didn't understand what that meant. She certainly didn't know about the role they had played in the rebellion that had led to the change in the legal system. Until today. Her teacher had spent the day teaching them about how the system used to work and how her parents had played the biggest roles.
"Willow, why wont you play with me?"
"I'll play in a minute. " Willow stood up, her mind still preoccupied with what she had learned that day. This was soon forgotten as she ran over to join her brother, Rye. After a high-speed game of Chase, they flopped on the grass and stared at the clouds to see if there were any interesting ones. Willow starts to sing a song that her mother taught her:
"Deep in the meadow, under the willow
A bed of grass, a soft green pillow
Lay down your head, and close your sleepy eyes
And when you awake, the sun will rise.
Here it's safe, here it's warm
Here the daisies guard you from harm
Here your dreams are sweet and tomorrow brings them true
Here is the place where I love you.
Under the grass, the fallen lie,
The innocent sleep under the sky
Lie down and sleep without any fear
When you wake I will be here."
She realizes the meaning of the words and how she plays on a graveyard where the murdered people of District 12 lie.
" That was beautiful Willow." Rye whispers in awe. "Please sing something else." Willow thinks for a while and sings a melancholy song:
"The innocent lost their lives Let the violence be a reminder to all
But their memory still survives
Families were torn apart
And all that is left is broken hearts
That the innocent are the first to fall
The bloodshed should never happen again
And only hope and peace should reign."
