"Stop whining. You will be fine."

"And if I'm not?"

"Then you can go to the afterlife with the satisfaction of proving me wrong."

Akari's jaw dropped. Did Jin really just say that to her? Sweet, kind, patient Jin? When had he developed such an attitude?

Jin smirked at her response. "What seems to be the matter now?" he asked, his tone falsely pleasant.

"Are you okay?" Akari blurted out, no other thought coming to mind.

Jin laughed and pushed his glasses further up his nose. "I'm just fine, Akari. And you are too. A broken finger will ache and it will be a little harder to use some of your tools, but otherwise you should be fine in a week or two. With the kind of work you do, I'm surprised that you haven't broken something before, or found an even more serious way to injure yourself."

"But… it hurts!"

"Akari, if you can get through an entire year of farming and doing only Goddess knows what in your free time, and come out of it with only a broken finger, I think you're doing pretty well. Use that hand only when necessary for the next week or so and you'll be just fine. The pain will fade. Now please, stop whining and leave me be." The good-natured smile on his face was the only thing keeping Akari from fainting out of shock.

"When did you get a 'tude?" she said, the words falling out of her mouth with no thought.

He laughed again. "I've always been like this. You're never here for any longer than two minutes and you're usually just talking to my grandmother. How would you know what I'm really like?

She paused for a moment, taking him in. His long black hair was much more lucious than her ever had any hope of being. His eyes, slightly hidden by the glare off his glasses, they were so much more expressive than she realized. Looking into them, she could see just how unsettled he really was, and just how incredibly forced his smile was- not that he would ever admit to faking a smile for her sake.

"...maybe I should come around more often, then. To get to know the real you, you know?" Akari said shyly, not sure how the usually stoic doctor would respond.

His faked smile grew into a real one, completely changing his face. "Maybe you should."

Finito.
