~Author's Notes:

This *is* a serious JJ story, concerning how I think JJ would react after finding out about the depth of Dee and Ryo's relationship. I must be one of the few who thinks he wouldn't fly into a jealous rage, but don't ask me why. In any case, here it is. Comments, suggestions, rants? All are welcome!~

Small point. His aim had to be dead-on. The slightest incorrect movement could throw him off. Just a moment longer...

The buzzer sounded. A shot fired, providing JJ Adams with yet another perfect bullseye. A sigh escaped the slender young man as he stood, stretching to release the tension and strain from sitting in sniper mode for over twenty minutes. "Nngh... haven't lost my touch yet." He glanced once around the empty shooting range. He was still reeling slightly from the shock of discovering Dee Laytner and Ryo McLane were happily together now, but he had handled it better than many had assumed he would. After all... who was he to stand between Dee and happiness? Sighing once more, he sank back into a sniper position, his whole body stilling until a person couldn't even detect the slightest breath from his lean form. "Composed. Quiet. Not a movement until the moment."

The target moved slowly along its rail. JJ remained rigid, readjusting his hands on the rifle, the rest of his body never moving. A small smile played on his lips as he recalled his partner Drake Parker's comments about him. /He could shoot a fly off its wings at a hundred yards without battin' an eye! A natural sharpshooter!/ A good thing for JJ, truthfully. Whenever he was upset by something, being at the range and letting frustration turn into rigid attentiveness was a true blessing.

Another buzzer sounded. JJ fired, hitting the bullseye dead-on. Closing his eyes, he ran his mind over the events of the past few weeks quickly. Everyone had noticed the subtle change in Ryo's attitude towards Dee, even JJ himself. Dee's persistant glomping and incessant affection shown towards the half-Oriental detective seemed to be appreciated now, and on occasion, that warm little smile that replaced the former disdainful glower Ryo would give him would light up the features of the narrow face.

Yes, it was obvious. Dee had finally gotten what he wanted. Ryo's affection and attention. And he, JJ, had no idea what to think about it.

When asked, he knew some of the other officers thought he would go off the wire. Snap or burst into tears. Anything but calmly say that he wished them well, which he did. Sometimes it was fun just to watch the surprised blink and listen to the stumble for words as he completely twisted everything they may have thought he would have done.

In all due truth, he probably would have done one of those things had he not had more composition about him than that. A guy had to be composed to be a sharpshooter, and that he was. He had walked right up to Dee without accosting him, shaken his hand, and congratulated him on finally getting together with Ryo. Not so much as a tear showed in those soft blue eyes.

Finally, JJ stood again, taking off his goggles and running his hand back through his hair, puffing a strand out of his face as it all simply fell back to the way it had been. With a quiet thank you for the owner of the shooting range, he accepted his score sheet. Every single shot, on target.

Carefully, he placed the rifle in its case and put his goggles in a holder. He had tried and failed. It was that simple.

As he collected his coat to leave the shooting range, a single tear escaped a sapphire eye, ignored by its owner.

That was the only target he had ever missed.
