The morning began in a decidedly horrendous manner for Jack, who awoke lying on something cold and rough (and most definitely uncomfortable), with eyesight blurred by sleep, and a painful pounding in his head.
Thud, thud.
A few moments to clear his head and grimy hand rubbing at his eyes brought Jack to the realization that he was, indeed, lying in the street, and that while the horrible throbbing was located somewhere just behind his left temple, it beat in time to the blows of hammer on anvil that rang clearly in the chilly autumn air.
Thud, thud.
Groaning slightly Jack righted himself and staggered to his feet; taking a few shaky steps forward he found a very familiar, worn wood door in his way. Smiling slightly, he took another step, hand outstretched to push open the door to his home and mouth agape to prepare for the berating he would unleash about decent work hours to the house's other occupant.
THUD.
It might have helped if the door wasn't locked. But the door was never locked! Jack took a moment to process this before he set about creating a racket of his own.
Thud, thud. THUDTHUDTHUD. Thud, thud.
"Lemme in, Will! Stop that and come open the door!"
There was a brief pause. Then,
THUD, thud. Thud, thud.
"Oh, c'mon! Why're you being such a bloody bastard? Just lemme in!"
THUDTHUDTH-
Jack broke off mid-knock (or mid-smack, as it were) and paused for thought. Why was Will being such a bloody bastard? And come to think of it, why was he asleep in the street, locked out of his house in the first place?
Thud, thud.
Brow furrowing as he thought, Jack let his head slip forward to rest on the door.
THUD.
What did he remember? The tavern, and drink. He also recalled a lack of Will; he had stayed home because… well anyways, Will was at home. But later, Will was there, and angry. Why was he angry? Maybe it was that girl, that was -
That girl.
"Oh bloody hell!"
THUDTHUDTHUDTHUD.
"Will! Will, I'm sorry! Lemme in! I swear I didn't do nothing, you had it wrong! She sat on my lap, and when I tried to push her off my hand landed there… It was an accident! I promise!"
Jack stilled his fists, and listened carefully. The striking of metal on metal had ceased, and a new noise approached - footsteps.
Thud. Thud. Thud.
With a soft click, the latch was lifted and the door swung inward. Jack found himself face to face with Will, still dressed in his clothes from last night, with tell-tale bloodshot eyes.
"Come inside, the neighbors are all watching the show you've been putting on."
Before the door swung shut, a few last words could be heard from Jack, who had slipped an arm around his lover's waist and beamed in a slightly unsettling manner.
"You were upset. See, I knew you loved me!"
And a short time later, to the neighbor's meddlesome ears a new sound was heard, though this racket was far from the kind of entertainment they were looking for. Jack simply thought they were lucky that this time he had waited until both he and Will were on the inside of the door.
Thud, THUD, THUD.
This day was certainly starting to look up.
