Poor Little Lab Rats
Zubat were small, weak, and defenceless in face of light. That made them quite easy pokemon to catch, and experiment in. Easier than rattata and caterpie even. They were so easy to frighten as well, and as much as they tried to live away from humans it was impossible.
Humans always went looking for things in caves. Sometimes it was just an innocent need for a light, but often it was more than that. More light. More noise. None of it necessary, and all of it just hurting the poor sensitive zubat.
And things weren't much better when they were caught, because they weren't great battlers. Lab experiments were all they were deemed good for. So of course it didn't matter if they were constantly high strung and starved.
And in those few cases where they were shown off to little kids on a field trip, they had to feel the pain of stones thrown at them as well.
