Elena
The car sped up, and soon the trees and shrubbery of the woods were just whirling images in the corner of her eye. She gently cradled her phone, thinking furiously of whom she was going to call.
"Him… Or him?" She thought, her mind almost turning into jelly as she realised her decision was imperative to that moment.
Her thoughts came to a halt. The weighed up pros and cons of each of them had been carefully examined in her distraught and confused brain, and she had come to a decision. A very hard decision at that, but a decision none the less. The driver glanced at her expectantly, and his eyes told her what she already knew. The phone call had to be made, now.
"Hello?" The voice answered her silence from the other end of the line.
"Hi." Her tone was without any emotion, she couldn't let him know how upset she was about the decision. It would break his heart anyway, and any emotion that came with it would rip him to shreds. It had broken hers too, but she knew she would have someone else to help her, to pick up the pieces, and to put them back together. She would be as good as new.
"Elena? What's wrong?" His paused for a second, until he realised that he would get no reply to the question.
"Look, I know it's been hard for you especially with…"
He was cut off as Elena began to talk rapidly into the cell phone, knowing that she had to get it over and done with, knowing it was now or never. She had to tell him, and this was the perfect time to do so.
"I love you. Yes, it's that simple, but it's not, and never will be. Too many disruptions get in the way. Even though I love you now," She took a breath as she thought of what to say next.
"I need a love that consumes me. One that will leave me awake at night, one that will go strong forever, and it will never leave my heart, body, mind and soul. I need that love, and…."
Her last words were fatal.
"…you can't provide that love. I'm so sorry Stephan."
She said her last word with added emphasis, hoping he would understand the true meaning of her words. That was the moment the car swerved off the bridge.
Damon
He ran through the hospital, not caring if anyone noticed his "difference" in speed. He knew she was hurt, Stephan's outward silence told him it all. Death had picked her to be his next victim. He ran into her room (information given to him by a newly compelled nurse) and simply stopped when he saw her, cold and limp like she was. She was lying draped across a hospital bed, dead to the world around her. His brother was sitting next to her, hands on his head in despair, rocking back and forth. Stephan looked up, saw the devastation in Damon's eyes and nodded.
She was gone.
