The position of Commander of the Military meant having many responsibilities and having an endless paperwork to deal with. And that was precisely what Hanji Zoe had done all day locked up in her office on the Survey Corps HQ. She could see from her window that it was already dark, but she still didn't feel like leaving the room.

It was September 5, her birthday. But she didn't think she had much to celebrate. This was her first anniversary since the death of her dear friends. Mike and Nanaba, Nifa, Abel and Keiji and then Moblit and Erwin. They were always nearby on her previous birthdays, whether it was a surprise party for her or just gathering and enjoying the day with her. She felt so lonely without them around.

Her thoughts were interrupted when she heard a knock on the door. When the door opened before she even told the person to come in, she knew the person could only be Levi.

"Hey Levi, what's up?" She asked with a smile, pretending that everything was normal.

"Hmm. Do you've any idea that you've been locked up here all day?" He stopped in front of her desk with his arms folded.

"Oh, I didn't realize it's already so late." She said stretching herself. "But tell me, do you need anything?"

"Yes, you."

She made a face of who didn't understand what he meant by that and watched the man coming toward her. He stopped behind her and bent to speak into her ear with a husky voice. "Later we'll have a celebration of our own. But for now... COME IN BRATS!" He stood up and spoke out loud the lasts words.

With that Eren, Mikasa, Armin, Sasha and Connie emerged from the door with Jean, who held a simple cake in his hand.

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY, HANJI-SAN!" They shouted in unison.

Levi pulled her out of her chair, since apparently she was too surprised even to move, and pushed her close to the children.

When she finally found the words she spoke. "Guys, what's all this?"

"It's your birthday today, isn't it?" Jean asked with a smile on his face.

"Hmm, yes but..."

"Since you didn't leave your office the whole day, we thought we'd bring the party over here!" Eren interrupted her.

"Yeah, we even tried to make a cake for you, but..." Armin said.

"You guys who made the cake by yourselfs?"

"Actually, it was Captain Levi who did it." Mikasa answered smirking.

Hanji looked at Levi incredulously.

"What? The brats were making a fucking mess in the kitchen, so I had to intervene."

"It's just you've never cooked for me before." Hanji said with a laugh.

With that statement, everyone made an awkward silence, some even looked a little blushed. Many people suspected the kind of relationship the Commander and the Captain had, but it was not common for them to assert something so intimate like this when other people were close. Only Connie and Eren seemed oblivious of the situation.

"In fact making the cake was harder than we all imagined." Connie said breaking the tension, while rubbing behind his neck.

"However what was really hard was preventing Sasha from eating it until now!" Jean said.

"But he looks so appetizing!" Sasha spoke, drooling a little.

Everyone laughed at her, except Levi who just lifted a corner of his mouth a little.

Hanji watched everyone having fun around her and she was affected by all that joy. Yes, she'd lost a lot of people she cared about, so many she couldn't even count. But she wasn't alone. She still had comrades... no, had friends she could depend on. Besides Levi, she knew he would always be by her side.

Maybe she still had reasons to celebrate after all.
