Once a month the postman gets a shock when he delivers to the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense. Once a month, Hellboy himself ventures out to get the mail.
The motive behind the trip is a complete mystery to everyone in the bureau. Over the years many attempts have been made to discover just what Hellboy was getting, but none had ever succeeded. Everything just happens too fast. As soon as the periodical-shaped parcel is deposited in his red hands it disappears into one of his many coat pockets, and none of the bureau agents are crazy enough to try to search him.
Whatever it was, Hellboy wanted to keep it a secret and he did a good job. No one knew for sure what the parcels contained, not even his closest friends.
Unfortunately, such enigmatic behavior practically screamed "Find out what I'm doing!", giving birth to a swarm of rumors. Everyone had a theory as to the nature of the monthly deliveries. The general consensus was that, due to the small and uniform size of the packages, it must be a magazine of some sort.
Liz's idea was it was a publication that would embarrass Hellboy if anyone were to see him with it. Something x-rated perhaps? Abe disproved that theory by pointing out that Hellboy would have no qualms about walking around the bureau with an adult magazine, as he'd done it before.
Professor Bruttenholm's hypothesis was the most widely accepted. He believed Hellboy was reading news and magazines devoted to pop culture. Trying to keep in touch with the outside world that he was rarely allowed to visit.
In a way, they were all correct. The package contained a magazine. One that would mortify Hellboy if revealed, yet had no suggestive content, and gave a connection (if you could call it that) to the rest of the world. Not that Hellboy would ever let them know. He would free the Ogdru Jahad before he told them about his subscription to Cat Fancy magazine. After all, he had an image to maintain.
AN: Hellboy loves cats, this is just the logical next step. (And more proof that I shouldn't be drinking coffee after midnight.)
