To Hold by Strawberry Promises

Someone to hold, someone to love, someone to call mine… Is Kaoru his someone? Is Kenshin hers? KK

Kenshin watched Kaoru slash at an imaginary opponent over and over again. His eyes tenderly traced her figure and how her eyes narrowed determinedly and how her movements were so graceful.

Her hair whipped around as she turned and she slowed her movements.

Kenshin smiled gently and watched as she fanned her face with her hand.

She was so energetic and happy. Kenshin's eyes fell to the ground.

He returned to his laundry.

Plunging his hands into the tub, he pulled out a white sheet. Kenshin started to scrub it slowly.

Kaoru let out a long breath. She had just finished a rigorous training routine and felt out of breath.

She stared down at her sweaty gi and hakama. Her heart fell.

Why wasn't she a graceful woman? One of those who wore beautiful silk kimonos and who were so elegant?

The woman her mother wanted her to be.

Maybe then she could find someone to be hers.

Maybe someone could love her.

And maybe a specific someone could love her back.

At dinner that evening, Kenshin noticed that instead of her usual attire, Kaoru wore a kimono. Sano had taken Yahiko out so they weren't here to disrupt dinner.

He smiled softly.

Kaoru set the table and seated herself.

She blushed when she made eye contact with Kenshin and quickly looked down.

They ate silently.

Kaoru watched Kenshin from under her eyelashes. He was staring into space with a thoughtful smile on his face.

Wondering about what he was thinking about, Kaoru's chopsticks came into her glass and a small "ding" was heard.

Kenshin snapped out of his daydream.

"Kaoru-dono, is something wrong, de gozaru?" Kenshin asked, concerned.

"Iie," Kaoru shook her head quickly and resumed eating. She finished and placed her dishes in the sink.

She fled from the room and its silence.

Kenshin sat there for a long time that evening.

An empty bowl of rice, chopsticks, and a glass of water were his only companions.

He brought his water to his lips and took a sip.

Why did she have to be so beautiful, her eyes so expressive, her whole being so graceful?

Releasing a sigh, he took his own dishes and placed them in the sink as well.

He turned and faced Kaoru.

She blinked and Kenshin's resolve disappeared.

He took a step forward and enclosed her in his arms.

And he held her.

AN: Whoa, that was weird. Not like my other stories, I'd have to say… Well, if you don't like it, I can't blame you. Hehe, I don't quite know why I wrote this…

Hmm… Did I say this was fluffy? Sorta fluffy… kinda angsty… not really… ugh I don't know I've never written this kind of thing before.

Whatever. I'm not expecting a lot of reviews for this but if you want to review, by all means, go right ahead!
