Birdkit opened her eyes and let out an excited yelp. They were going to be apprentices today! She woke up Thrushkit, Jaykit, Ravenkit, and Owlkit.
"Settle down my kits your disturbing Daisy." Birdkits mother, Dovewing said drowsily.
Birdkit was the only she-kit of her litter and got lonesome easily. Her brother Ravenkit was her closest friend.
Dovewing sat up, pulled Thrushkit towards her and groomed his pelt. Then Bumblestripe, their father, came in and started to groom Jaykit. Dovewing named them all after birds.
When Dovewing finished grooming Thrushkit, she started on Ravenkit. When Ravenkit was finished it was her turn. Something strange happened. When Dovewing grabbed Birdkit, she saw images of herself as an apprentice.
She heard Bramblestar, "Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey, gather around Highledge."
All five kits raced into the clearing. Pretty soon the whole clan was in the clearing.
"Thrushkit please come forward. From this moment on until you receive warrior name you will be known as Thrushpaw, your mento will be Hazeltail."
He touched noses with Hazeltail. Soon Jaypaw had Squirrelflight, Ravenpaw had Millie, and Owlpaw had Berrynose.
"Birdkit please forward, from this moment on until you receive your warrior name, you will be known as Birdpaw, and your mentor will be Ivypool."
She touched noses with Ivypool and headed into the swarm of cats.
"Thrushpaw, Jaypaw, Ravenpaw, Owlpaw, and Birdpaw!"
Birdpaw thrust her way through the cats.
She was an apprentice now!
