Closing her eyes, Kimberly drew in a couple of deep breaths. Things had been a bit crazy lately, but that was life. Opening her eyes she slowly pulled into the intersection. She was nearly through it when she heard a metallic crunching sound. She had barely realized what was happening when everything went black.
The wreck was a gruesome scene. Of course there were the usual spectators, even at this time of night. The young EMT shook her head in disgust, and returned to her job. So far their expectations were being met. There were no signs of life in the pick-up truck, and the pink convertible didn't look promising. It was crushed.
"Hey, I'm getting a pulse over here, someone grab a stretcher!"
Every member of the team rushed over to the young woman's side. They carefully shifted the body of the injured woman from the debris onto the stretcher.
"Let's try to get her stabilized, call ahead, and let them know we have a critical situation." Someone yelled as the team got the injured woman into the ambulance.
After all the rush of action when she was found, Kimberly now lay in a somewhat comatose state in a private room in the ICU. Some say that you can hear everything around you while you're in a coma. If that's true, then most everyone who had been around Kimberly for the last couple of hours had been using the same phrase, hold on.
While Kimberly lay there unmoving, her mind was racing. A scene was coming into her view, and she felt weird to say the least. Kimberly looked around, she didn't see anyone. What she saw around her resembled the park and the lake in her hometown of Angel Grove. She looked up and the sky appeared stormy. One more time she heard a distant voice say, hold on. For some reason, all she could think of in return was "Why?"
Admittedly things in her life had been getting better lately, but Kimberly couldn't help but think back to points in her life that weren't as good. That led her to the question, why should she hold on?
