Chapter 1: Joining Phantom!

Year x777

Lucy sobbed, pushing her back against the bark of the large tree among many others. She cried out, pushing herself up to begin searching again for her parent figure, Yusa. Yusa had taken care of her ever since she had found her wandering the woods. Lucy could only remember riding in a carriage with her parents, when they were attacked by bandits and her mother had told her to run away. She ended up getting lost and running into Yusa, who agreed to look after her. This was 3 years ago, when she was 7.

Yusa had always been the one to take care of her, treating her like her own child. But now Yusa was gone, she had disappeared. And now Lucy was lost, all alone.

She hated being alone. She hated being without Yusa. That's why she had to look for her.

"Yusa! Yusa, where are you?! Yusa?!"Lucy cried out, wiping away her tears to get a better sight of the woods. While running, she couldn't help but think that maybe, just maybe, Yusa had left her on purpose. Maybe Yusa had gotten tired of her and flown away, disregarded Lucy.

This only succeeded in making Lucy cry harder.

Eventually, Lucy began tiring out. After hours of walking and walking, not even knowing where she was going. She began to slow down just as she reached a place that she faintly recognized. It was a town, a place she hadn't been in awhile. She had never been in this specific town, but she did recognize it as one.

She panted softly as she began sinking to the floor. She felt as if she were about to collapse. Finally, as she was crossing what looked like a stone bridge, her legs gave out and to planted face first into the ground. The last thing she remembered before she blacked out was a figure standing over, asking if she was okay.

Lucy woke to the loud sound of a baby crying. She pushed herself up on the bed she was lying in and rubbed her drooping eyes. She looked around the room she was in. She seemed to be in a small guest room. She pulled herself out of the bed, fixing the covers after she stood up. She walked over to the window to her right and got on her tiptoes to stick her head out of it. The sun had risen high, so it had obviously been a long time since she had been searching for Yusa. It was dark when she passed out.

At least she seemed to be in the same town.

She took one more look around the room before deciding to exit the room through the wooden door. She was greeted by a lady trying to calm her crying baby.

The lady was very pretty, in Lucy's mind. She had curly blonde locks, tied up in a ponytail and round blue eyes. She wore a simple, light blue dress. From the way her stomach stretched out, it seemed she would be feeding for two soon. The baby that was in her hands looked similar to his mother, with blonde, silky hair and shiny blue eyes.

The baby eventually replaced his crying with laughing as he poked his mothers cheek, causing Lucy to giggle slightly.

This caused the lady to look up, blinking slowly. Her startled face soon turned into a relieved one.

"Oh, thank goodness you're awake. You'd been out for so long, we were afraid you'd gone into a coma." The lady said kindly.

Lucy blinked, staring at her confusedly, which caused the lady to smile.

"Oh, don't be so nervous! Come on over here and make yourself comfortable." She said, patting the chair next to her.

Lucy nodded slightly and strolled over to sit next to her.

"Now, just wait here while I put little Adam here back to bed." she said as she walked away.

Lucy inspected her surroundings. The house was comfy and small. There were maybe three rooms in the house. One was the guest room that she had been in, the other one was probably the baby's room, and the last one was most likely the lady's room. She was currently sitting in the kitchen that also seemed to be a dining room, behind the kitchen counter there was a small living room and the entrance to the house.

The lady came out of the baby's room, sighing while she clapped her hands. She walked over to the table, laughing softly.

"He's a restless one, he is."

"Um... how old is he?" Lucy asked quietly.

The lady smiled, sitting down across from Lucy. "He's only two. It's seems like we've had him forever, though."

Lucy nodded, looking down at her hands. This lady reminded her of her own mom. The two were both caring, kind, and motherly (obviously).

The lady seemed to notice her uneasiness. "So, dear, where are your parents?"

This caused Lucy's eyes to gather up with tears that threatened to fall.

"I... I don't know!" she said, her voice shaking.

The lady quickly got up to go and hug Lucy. "Shh... Calm down... I'm sorry for asking. Just calm down." she said in a soothing voice.

After some time, Lucy slowed her breathing and leaned into the hug.

1 year later...

"Thank you for the food!" Lucy said as she grabbed her spoon.

Abigail, or Abbey, as she preferred to be called, and her husband, Felix, had allowed Lucy to stay with them until she found her adoptive mom, Yusa. She told them her mom was a dragon, but of course they didn't believe her. In all honesty, the two had just thought that her parents had abandoned her and had decided to adopt her into the family, seeing as they couldn't very well send her away. She was 10 for goodness sake.

"So, Lucy. You were telling us about how you could perform magic? Can you show us any magic tricks?" Felix asked with a small smile. Felix had light brown hair and a small mustache lying over his mouth along with green eyes. He reminded Lucy of a man she remembered that used to serve her her food.

Lucy nodded and pushed her chair back, jumping off of it. "Yusa taught me this." she said before she began making motions with her hands. Suddenly the are that she was standing at began glowing as a red magic circle appeared beneath her.

"Fire Ball!" she yelled as a flame appeared from her mouth, shaping into a small ball of fire. Right before the ball could hit anything, she called out, "Ice Ball!" A shell of ice began to shape around the ball of fire. The sight was beautiful while it lasted. The fire began to melt the ice away, reducing it into water, and the water reduced the fire into hydrogen.

She turned back to face Abbey and Felix with a bright smile on her face.

"So? What did ya think?"

The two just stared at her with wide eyes and a gaping mouth.

1 month later

Lucy pulled down the purple dress that Abbey had forced her to wear.

"Do I have to go? I don't wanna!" she complained.

Abbey sighed, placing a hand on her shoulder. "Yes, sweetie. You do have to go."

"But whyyy?" Lucy whined, tugging at the ponytail Abbey had put her hair into.

"'Because," Felix said, walking up from behind the two. He was carrying Adam in his arms. "These people can help you control your magic."

"But I already know how to control my magic!" Lucy exclaimed, crossing her arms. "Yusa already taught me how!"

Abbey turned Lucy to face her and squatted down to her height, giving her a comforting smile. "Look, I know that you're scared, Lucy. But right now, you have to trust us on this. These people, they know all about magic. They can even help you to improve it and to control it better. They'll help you."

Lucy looked down and nodded slightly.

"Good, now take this letter and show it to Jose. That's how he'll know it's you, okay?" Abbey handed Lucy a letter, and then hugged her tightly right after. "Oh, I'm going to miss you!"

Lucy hugged Abbey back, enjoying the motherly warmth she radiated. Abbey finally pulled away, breathing in a sharp breath. She stood up and straightened. "Now you better be on your way, then. And be sure to visit a lot! I want you to be here to her before she's all grown up." she said firmly, a hand lying on her large stomach.

Lucy giggled and nodded. "Wish me luck! Bye Felix, bye Adam!" she said, gripping onto her pink suitcase and opening the door. "I'll miss you guys." she called behind her as she ran off, her suitcase rolling behind her.

Abbey leaned against Felix, watching as she dashed off. A tear rolled down her cheek and she gave a small laugh. "I really am gonna miss her."

Lucy hummed softly to herself as she stared out the train window. She was humming a song that she remembered from her old home. A song her mom used to sing to her just before she went to bed, the song that always comforted her and reassured her that everything was going to be fine.

She smiled slightly and turned away from the window to look through her bag. She fumbled through it for a moment, frowning slightly. She could've sworn she had stored a Children's Fairy Tales book in there. Well, if it wasn't in there, then where was it? She picked herself off the seat and began looking around the area. Under the seat? No. In the aisle? No. Then where was it?

"Looking for this?" she heard someone's voice ask. She looked up, slightly startled. There a boy was standing. He looked around her age, if only a year older. He had neck length, black, messy hair and piercing red eyes. He was wearing a grey t-shirt, shorts, and he had a backpack slung over his shoulders. In his hands he had her book.

She pushed herself off the floor and nodded. "Uh, y-yeah! Do you mind giving it back to me?"

The boy shrugged and threw the book over to Lucy, who struggled to catch it for a moment, before she finally managed to keep it in her hands. She sighed and sat back down on the chair, pushing her book back into her back. She looked back up to thank the boy, before she realized that he was already gone. She huffed and lied her head against the train window, feeling her eyes grow heavier and heavier until she finally fell asleep.

"We are now approaching Oak Town, I repeat we are now approaching Oak town."

Lucy yawned, stretching her arms over her head before looking out the window to see dozens and dozens of people shuffling through the crowds. Finally, she was here!

She quickly threw her bag over her shoulder and pulled her suitcase out of the compartment it was stored in. She pushed her way through the slow people in the train, eager to get out.

"Hey watch where you're going!"

"Sorry!" Lucy simply said as she continued to push through.

She made her way out of the train, gripping the letter in her pocket. Now all she had to do was find her way to the guild and she'd be fine.

Only, she had no idea where the guild could be. She sighed, slightly discouraged before shaking her head and clapping her cheeks. She looked back up with a determined sort of fire in her eyes as she began to trudge her way out of the station.

"Oh! Who was I kidding?!" Lucy plopped herself onto a bench, closing her eyes in defeat. "This town is huge, I'll never be able to find it!"

"What's wrong with you, blondie?" There was that voice again.

Lucy opened one of her eyes to look up at the boy. "Hey, you're the one from the train station right?" She asked as she opened both her eyes.

"Yeah, the name's Gajeel. Gajeel Redfox." He introduced himself.

"Nice to meet you, Gajeel!" Lucy smiled, jumping off the bench enthusiastically. She loved meeting new people! She pointed to herself, grinning. "I'm Lucy!"

"Good to meet'cha too, blondie. So, what was that you were looking for again?"

"Oh yeah..." Lucy muttered, deflating. "I was looking for a guild, but this town is too big and I can't seem to be able to find it."

"A guild? Do you mean Phantom Lord?" Gajeel asked.

Lucy looked up, surprised. "You know the guild? Can you take me there?!"

Gajeel shrugged and stuffed his hands into his short pockets. "Sure, why not. I was just headed there myself."

"Really?! You're a mage?" Lucy asked, her enthusiasm returning as quickly as it left.

Gajeel snorted at her actions, but answered anyway. "Yeah, I was just heading back from a mission with some of my teammate." He said as he began leading the way.

Lucy gasped, smiling widely. "That's so awesome! Where's your teammate?"

Gajeel stopped in his tracks, scratching his cheek. "Erm... I actually don't know..."

He placed his hand over his eyes and turned his head, as if scouting out for her.

"Here, I'll help you!"

Lucy walked up next to him and stood on her tiptoes so she was about his height. She began repeating Gajeel's actions.

Gajeel looked over at her, snorting at how focused and serious she looked.

"Gajeel, there you are."

He turned his head to face his teammate. "There I am? You're the one that disappeared, woman!"

"No, it wasn't Juvia that left Gajeel, it was Gajeel that left Juvia to go talk to the blonde girl.

Gajeel scowled. "I did not!"

Lucy blinked and looked over at the girl. Was this his teammate? She was so pretty, and kind of creepy looking...

She was slightly taller than her, though she looked to be the same age. The first thing she noticed was her dark blue eyes that seemed to stare into her soul, as if she could read her deepest thoughts. She had light blue hair that curled upward at the ends and she wore a hat over her head. She wore what seemed like a permanent frown on her face, it kind of made Lucy scared to approach her. She also wore a dark blue jacket over what looked like a blue dress, which was odd considering it was August.

She seemed to notice Lucy's staring and turned her gaze toward her. "Juvia wants to know who you are." she said.

Lucy blinked and gave Juvia a bright smile, that was not returned. She held out her hand nervously. "Hi, I'm Lucy! Nice to meet you."

Juvia stared at the hand, then looked back at Lucy. She gave a small 'hmph' and turned her head away. Lucy faltered, lowering her hand. Just as Lucy was sure she wouldn't receive a reply, the blue haired girl turned back to Lucy and held out her hand. "Juvia."

Lucy blinked, slightly startled. She smiled after and grasped Juvia's hand in her own, shaking it.

Once letting go, Lucy looked up at the slightly taller girl. "Juvia, your name is pretty, just like you!"

Juvia simply stared in shock at Lucy. No one had ever called her pretty before. The words caused Juvia to blush slightly as she turned away.

"Say, Lucy?"

Lucy looked up at Gajeel, slowing her pace. "Yeah?"

"What kind of mage are you?"

Lucy stopped in her tracks, her two companions doing the same.

She thought for a moment. 'Should I tell them... I don't know if it's a normal power. What if it's forbidden? Yusa never taught me this! But... they're my friends. I need to trust them.' she nodded, finally deciding.

"Well, I'm a Celestial mage and Dragon Slayer." she announced to the two.
