Only Ten

Characters: Link (from Legend of Zelda)
~Pairings: Nothing Specified
Word Count: 314
Note: Takes place during Ocarina of Time

Everyone seems to forget that you're only ten. That while your face remains brave and confident on the inside you're screaming, because you've seen not only the monsters of the world, but those things that are far worse than the monsters as well.

You have seen death and destruction and the very worst of mankind, the very evil of it.

You want to go home.

You want to go back to your tree in the woods where you were safe, where the worse thing about your life was your lack of a fairy.

You want comfort, you want Saria, you want home.

But you can't go home, because suddenly people are counting on you to save them. You want to scream.

You're only ten.

Until all at once you're not ten, you're seventeen. You're seventeen and in a body that feels strange and yet familiar as you awaken from a deep sleep you never wanted to take.

Calmly, swiftly, easily, you are told what happened in your absence and though no one says it you know that it's your fault. It's your fault that the world outside is burning and that evil covers a once beautiful land, because you were the one that let Ganodorf into the Sacred Realm.

But you can't dwell on that, you can't get wrapped up in your grief, because just like before the world needs you. They need to you to save them, to protect them, to help them. They need you to fix the destruction that you caused.

And so you run out into a burning world, with too big feet slapping against the mud, as too long strides carry you forward into nightmares.

But as you face them, as you destroy the monsters, you can't help, but cry out on the inside with every wound and every blow that deep down in your heart, you're still only ten.

I just finished Ocarina of Time and I loved the storyline...lots of angsty stuff :)
