It was the night after graduation. The first day of the rest of their lives. Only a long summer of relaxing and balboa bars awaited them. After that, college. Freedom. Life. They had tried going to the infamous after-grad party at Holly's but had somehow found themselves sitting on the beach within an hour. It was better that way, just the four of them.
"I can't believe we actually made it through this year," Marissa said breaking the long yet comfortable silence.
None of them could. It wasn't easy. Marissa had killed Ryan's brother and Kirsten was in rehab. That certainly wasn't a promising start. The aftermath of 'the incident', which it was decidedly referred to now, was long, horrible and overwhelming. It didn't break them, but on many occasions came extremely close to doing just that. In the end, after a lot of late nights, crying, and much legal help from Sandy, the situation somehow worked itself out.
And so, there they were. Sitting and waiting for the new chapter in their life to start because for once, they were ready to face it. Together. After the summer they were all going to attend NYU. They had each chosen it for different reasons but basically it was the only college that accepted all four of them. So the choice was a given.
"I can't believe I made it through high school without, you know, getting killed by some crazed water polo player," Seth replied.
At this, they all smiled. They knew that getting beat up by the many water polo players of Newport had been the last thing on Seth's mind this year. The whole Newport scene, water polo players and all, just seemed so trivial compared to what they were all going through.
Summer rested her head on Seth's chest and snuggled closer to him as Ryan gently kissed the top of Marissa's head. A woman walking her dog walked towards them and noticing this, Summer rummaged quickly through her purse.
"Umm, excuse me?" She said to the woman. "Would you mind taking our picture?"
The woman smiled politely.
"Not at all"
Summer got up and handed her the disposable camera.
"The flash is that button…there," she added hastily as she returned to her seat.
The woman obviously didn't have a knack for photography because she took the picture while all four of them where still moving. Before they could request another picture, the woman tossed the camera right back to Summer and started to walk away.
"Uh, thanks!" Summer yelled after her with a baffled expression on her face. "Bitch," she grumbled under her breath just loud enough for the others to hear her.
"That's why you never ask someone in Newport Beach for a favor," Seth added sarcastically.
And that was it. They sat there all night. They watched the sun go down, and waited for it to come back up again. They reminisced like it was their last day together. They talked and they laughed until they were all too tired to do so anymore.
And it was perfect.
(A/N - This is actually going to be a chaptered fanfic. It is a future fic that will be SS with some RM in it as well. This is just a flashback to get the story started. Reviews are immensely appreciated! If you liked it, tell me. If you thought it was okay, tell me what it was lacking. If you thought it was by far the worst thing that you have ever read, tell me why and how I could do better and I will honestly try my best to fix it. I don't mind any kind of review as long as it somewhat constructive and helpful. Thanks soo much!)
