Far Away
Far Away-Nickelback
'Cause you know
You know, you know
That I love you
I have loved you all along
And I miss you
Been far away for far too long
I keep dreaming you'll be with me and you'll never go
Caroline Forbes isn't sure why she is standing in the airport. Klaus is a soldier returning from a six-month tour in Iraq. Bonnie just wants Kol to come back and Henrik gives Caroline advice about love. Fluffy one-shot about Klaroline. Klaroline and Kennett. A/H.
Just to clarify some things, in order for the readers not to become confused
-Bonnie has not met Caroline
-Klaus only has two brothers (Elijah and Finn) and a sister (Rebekah)
-Kol is with Bonnie and has adopted a boy (Henrik)
-Caroline is out of school, currently in a gap year.
Feel free to ask any other questions.
Caroline isn't sure why she is standing in the airport. She wrings her hands as she stands on her toes to see if he has miraculously appeared in the last minute. She broke off a two-year relationship with the local bad boy, Niklaus Mikaelson, as he had enlisted in the army and she wasn't up to a long-distance relationship. Klaus respected that and promised to be back in six months, and they could try again. She glances around, only to see several families, as well as women and children eagerly awaiting their soldiers.
A short beep emits from Caroline's back pocket. She quickly takes her phone out and swipes her finger over the screen. An IM from Elena: I hope you know what you're doing. Caroline scowls and taps a short message back: You're one to talk. She then switches her phone off and looks at the large clock and then at the arrival times.
Nik's plane is late, she thinks.
A small hand touches her arm. She looks down and sees a boy. His brown eyes sparkle and she crouches, immediately going into her childminder role.
"Yes?"
"Who are you waiting for? I'm waiting for my brother. His name is Kol. He's been in the army for three years, so he's extremely strong/"
"Oh, I'm waiting for a friend," she tells the boy.
"Is he a girl or boy?" A woman rushes over and starts to tug the boy away, maintaining her hold on a bundle tucked in her arm.
"Let him stay, I don't mind the questions," the woman nods, but stands nearby.
"It's a boy, well, man, really."
""Are you going to marry him?" the boy's eyes grow large.
"Henrik!" the woman sighs.
"I'm sorry, he's very inquisitive. I'm Bonnie," she holds her hand out to Caroline.
"I'm Caroline; and like I said, I don't mind the questions. Are you also waiting for a soldier?" Bonnie nods and tucks her dark brown hair behind her hair.
"My husband, Kol Bennett, he's been in Iraq for over six months, and I just can't wait," she gestures to the bundle.
"This is my daughter, Shelia." Caroline opens the blanket and strokes the caramel skin of the baby.
"How old is she?"
"Four weeks. Who are you waiting for?"
"Uhm, Klaus, Klaus Mikaelson. He's my ex."
"Hello, I'm waiting here!" Henrik shouts loudly. Everybody in the airport looks over at him, shooting disbelieving looks at Bonnie. She cuffs the back of his head. Caroline simply smiles and crouches.
"Yes, Henrik, what is it?"
"Are you going to marry him?"
"Uhm, I'm not sure. I'm not even going out with him at the moment."
"So, why are you here then?" Bonnie rolls her eyes.
"Well, Henrik, to be honest, I'm not exactly sure why."
"Do you love him?" Caroline blinks at his bluntness.
'Yes."
"Well, then you should marry him!" Caroline smiles, bows her head and brushes her hair back.
"It's not that easy, Henrik," the blonde tells him softly.
"Yes, it is. My previous foster mom always told me: If it's true love, then it's easy."
"And what do you say?"
"I think that when you fall in love; you're supposed to get shot with an arrow, or something, but the rest of it isn't supposed to be so painful. One of my friends told me that one of the people must have freckles, and they must find somebody else who has freckles too," Henrik stares at Caroline.
"Lucky for you, you have freckles. Let's hope your soldier has freckles too," Caroline smiles at him.
"What do you think about kissing?" Henrik shifts to glance over at Bonnie.
"Well, the law says you have to be eighteen, so I wouldn't want to mess with that. But, Jimmy, a fifth-grader told me that when a person gets kissed for the first time, they fall down and don't get up for at least an hour," Caroline laughs.
"I suppose that is true," Henrik looks over at the arrivals and squeals.
"Kol!" he runs to greet his brother. Bonnie smiles as she spots her husband.
"If you want, we could always get together and have dinner sometimes. After we find our men, we can exchange numbers," the blonde smiles.
"That would be nice, thank you," Bonnie shifts Shelia in her arms and Caroline holds her hands out.
"Why don't I hold her while you greet your husband? I'll give her back to you soon," the darker-skinned woman thinks and then hands over the baby. Caroline opens the blanket and coos at the baby. She looks up to see Bonnie running to Kol. He pushes his luggage away and picks her up. He spins her around and kisses her. Bonnie locks her fingers in Kol's hair. When Kol finally sets Bonnie down, Caroline hears Henrik groan in disgust. Kol flicks his brother on the nose and places his hand on his wife's slightly large stomach. Bonnie rests her head on his shoulder. Kol lifts his head and whispers something to Bonnie. She moves her head and points to Caroline. The blonde walks over to the couple. She smiles at the man in the army overalls and hands over Shelia.
"You have a very beautiful daughter," Kol gives Caroline a million-dollar smile.
"Thanks. She gets all of her looks from her mom," Bonnie rolls her eyes and grins at Caroline.
"Caroline here is also waiting for a soldier," Kol arches an eyebrow.
"Really, what's his name?"
"Klaus," she says simply. Kol's smile grows wider.
"Mikaelson? You with Mikaelson?"
"Not real-" Caroline starts to say, but is stopped by Kol.
"That's good. Mikaelson needs a girl. He's a very quiet person, but you can tell that he loves somebody," Caroline tilts her head.
"He often talks about a blonde goddess from his small town. I'm his platoon leader, so I hear everything he says. He's talks about her light and how beautiful she is," Caroline closes her eyes, smiling softly.
"Does he still paint?" Kol nods.
"He paints all the time. Mostly, it's drawings of a girl, who I must say, looks a lot like you. Look, here he is now, hey Mikaelson!" he waves his hand in the direction of the door that leads to the luggage area.
Caroline looks over at the door, only to see Niklaus Mikaelson. His normally medium length curly blond hair was cut short in the beginning and is now short. His dark blue eyes sparkle as he glances over at Caroline.
"Caroline?" she walks unsteadily over to him, aware that the Bennetts are watching her. Klaus pushes his luggage away.
"I thought you weren't coming," the softness of the sentence heightens his British accent,
"I, uhm changed my mind," he smiles at her, making her stumble and fall. Klaus catches her and helps her to regain her balance.
"I want to tell you something," she begins. He arches an eyebrow, but nods.
"Ok, so it's not going to be easy. It's going to be hard. We're going to have to work at this every day, but I want to do that because I want you. I want all of you, forever, you and me, every day. My heart is and will always be yours. Don't forget, I'm just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her. I'm scared, Nik. I'm scared of walking away and never feeling the way that I feel with you," Caroline stops and looks up at the ceiling, trying not to let tears fall. Klaus steps forward and brushes a tear off her cheek.
"I love you, Caroline. I have loved you all along. I have missed you while I was away. I kept on dreaming that you'll be with me and you'll never leave me." Klaus pulls a small box from his pocket and drops down to his knee.
"Caroline, here I am, on my knees. I'm asking you for one last chance. Because I'd withstand all of hell to hold your hand. I'm never going to leave you, even if I'm away." Caroline gasps as Klaus opens the small box and sees an ornate ring, adorned with lapis lazuli.
"Caroline Forbes, would you do the honour of marrying me?: Caroline starts to cry again and simply nods. Klaus stands up and gently slips the ring on her fourth finger. Caroline simply stares at the ring and then leaps into Klaus' arms. He laughs as he swings her around. He sets her down and hooks his hand around her waist, grabbing his luggage with the other hand. They walk over to the Bennetts and Bonnie squeals with excitement as she gently grabs the blonde's hand, gushing over the ring. Kol throws an arm over Klaus' neck and ruffles his hair with the other hand. They walk off to their respective vehicles; with the men making plans to get together before they are deployed and the women making plans to visit bridal stores.
