He sighed as he watched them frolic and play. They were beautiful. The most amazing creatures he had ever seen. All silvery white with silver hooves, and the bluest eyes anyone had ever seen. He wondered once again how anyone could think that they were just horses. They might resemble them in shape, but that was it. They were so much more than horses, more than anyone who wasn't Chosen could know. But then he couldn't really say that, since he wasn't Chosen himself. Somehow, it was just obvious to him.
He'd been in Haven, at the palace itself, for almost two years now. It seemed like much longer. Most of his spare time had been spent just watching the Companions in their Field. Hoping and praying that one day one of them would Choose him. He knew it was too much to hope for, but that didn't stop him from wishing. He knew that he had the correct Gifts for it and often wondered why he was never Chosen.
They were constantly telling him that it wasn't because he was a bad person. It was just that there weren't enough Companions for all the Gifted people. That didn't make it hurt any less. And it didn't make him want to be around them any less. He often wondered if the Heralds really realized how lucky they were. What they really had. Or if they took it for granted. If they just thought of the Companions as something that they.deserved or something.
He knew the Heralds were supposed to be unselfish and well.most people thought of them as perfect. But, maybe, that was because of the Companions. For they surely were more perfect than any human could be. Why didn't they worship...or if not exactly worship, revere them more than they did? Why weren't they treated more special? Yes, it was true that they were treated better than normal horses, but not as good as they deserved. At least he didn't think so.
He'd been watching and admiring them for almost two years and the wonder still hadn't worn off. He'd always thought about how badly he wanted a Companion. Not to be a Herald, though that certainly came with it and he would love to help people. The real reason was that he would have a true friend...more than a friend. Someone closer to him than anyone else. Someone to trust completely and be trusted by completely. To never be alone...to always have someone. It was what he wanted most in the world, and it seemed that he would never get it.
There were several Companions near the fence that he was leaning on, but none seemed to be paying him the slightest bit of attention. He sighed quietly and turned to go back inside when something caused him to turn back around.
There, standing right in front of him, was the thing he desired most. There seemed to be an aura around the Companion, as if she was glowing with a silver light. He knew without looking that she was beautiful beyond compare. Suddenly those intense blue eyes locked with his own deep green ones, and she spoke in his mind, with a voice more beautiful than anything he had ever heard. :: My name is Ratha, and I Choose you.::
