1991- Tufnell Park, London
Gwen Choke came out of the hospital carrying a small, wriggling bundle in her arms. She looked at the rows of parked cars until her eyes settled on a small red car which she recognised as Jame's car. She crossed the car park towards the car and leaned against the side of it. A figure came out of the door of the hospital and headed over to the car.
"Gwen." The man said.
"Hello, James. You took a long time getting here didn't you?" She spoke coldly. He twisted uncomfortably.
"Yeah, I was with Hannah. You know my girlfriend?"
"Yes, I have heard of her but I haven't met her and I don't want to meet her either."Gwen snapped.
"Gwen, what's wrong? What has she ever done to you?"
"Everything is wrong. Little James has been born without his father being there. You couldn't come to see your own little boy come in to the world. Instead you spent time with your girlfriend. How does that make me feel?" Gwen sobbed.
"I…I…well I didn't mean to have a son. I mean it wasn't like we planned it or anything. It was a surprise that is all." James looked guilty. "I have to get back to Hannah; she has a bit of a headache…"
"A headache? Are you being serious? How does a headache matter when your son has just been born? I just don't get you sometimes; in fact I never did get you."
"It matters to me though. I'm going and don't ever contact me again. Never and I mean it!" James got in his car and drove off very fast.
Gwen sighed and brushed a tear from her cheek. She got on the nearest bus and sat down.
She stared out of the window as the buildings rushed past. She was worried about money: Her flat had a massive mortgage and she had been on maternity leave for the last couple of months. How could she pay for a nanny to look after James?
"Windchurch Lane."
The bus stopped outside Gwen's house and she walked off the bus and went in to her block of flats. She climbed up the stairs and stopped next to number eight. She fumbled with her key in the lock and went in. A pile of post fluttered through the door and she picked up the envelopes. Bills, advertisements and a bank statement.
She put the adverts into the recycling bin, and noticed a small envelope lodged under the door mat. It had familiar writing but Gwen didn't know where she had seen it before. It was addressed to James Choke. Gwen glanced at her baby and wondered who would know him already as he was only a couple of days old. She slit the envelope and a card slid out. With trembling fingers, she opened the card:
To James,
I love you, and it's sad that I can't be with you as you grow up. I will contact you one day, so we can catch up on everything I have missed
Lots of Love
James
A small teddy accompanied the card.
Gwen put the card and the bear on the mantelpiece. Jamesdid care, and she had yelled at him and got all cross. He had left when he could have considered staying. Now he was gone, and had vowed never to contact her again. He would contact James one day. All Gwen could do was wait for that time to come. Maybe a visit or a phone call. A letter or an email.
But it was highly unlikely. After all, Gwen knew James, and didn't expect him to ever come back.
