"Kinmotsu Kuusou"

It had been one of the warmest days in April.

Hatori had loved days like these, if only because they made Kana so very happy.

She had bounced into the office one day, wearing a large straw hat and a thin sundress. "Moou, 'Tori-san! It's too warm outside to be cooped up in the office!" She had opened the windows, letting the cool breeze float through the room.

He had smiled at her warmly as she grabbed his hand and started to tow him out of the room. "You need a break!" she had said, smiling widely at him.

Of course, whatever dear Kana had suggested, Hatori went along with. It /was/ rather warm outside, so he shed his lab coat and laid down on the blanket she had spread on the ground, his tie loose around his neck.

She had anticipated his giving in and had created a picnic - almost a feast. She leaned against the touya tree, the blossoms swirling around and mixing with the sakura blossoms from the tree next to it. Hatori could merely gaze at the beauty that she was - her joyful face, the white and cream flowers floating around, giving her an ethereal and throughly angelic look.

Which, he had thought, was appropriate. For she was his very own angel and he loved her with all his heart and soul.

"'Tori-san?" she had prodded him gently back into the real world. "Have you been listening anything I said?"

"Ah, gomen nasai, Kana-kun. I was thinking about how beautiful you are," he had let slip. Then a blush had graced his face.

Kana's smile had became even bigger and she had kissed Hatori's forehead. "'Tori-san's so sweet," she had replied.

The rest of the day had been bliss for Hatori, and he had hoped it would never end.

This is why he never let his mind wander, Hatori sighed and picked up his pen again. He had been writing a list of directions for Kana, who was restarting work after a maternity leave. He didn't wish to talk to her much - it would remind him of what he had, and what he lost.

And that would hurt even more than simple, forbidden daydreams.
