I like this one. Sort of.

EDIT: Sorry, the formatting's really crappy here - there's supposed to be a hell of a lot more of disjointed line breaks and things but they won't work here. Maybe when I get my site up, eh?

-------Minazuki: START--

---

Standing at the riverbank, toes to the edge
Rain slipping off the spokes of the umbrella
You're watching the river race the wind and thinking
it's all like fate, really,
without the horoscopes
and the dolled-up fortune-tellers(makers).
Twisting, running, losing.

Remember a time when you'd clasp your mother's hand
and stand
and smile?

Seventeenth of June.

June. That is, juin, juni, giugno, rokugatsu.

The road above quietens,
Hoarse from its continuous rumbling.
Remember a time when you'd look out the car window,
watching the road lines run past
with military precision?
Splitting, blending, dividing.
Going nowhere.

I'll protect you, she'd say.

And then later, he said
it's just that the woman I fell in love with
was a woman who could die
protecting
her son

And what you said, because you were desperate
to live up to your name

- what?

you'd protect her from the rain?
from the fucking water, for God's sake?

The river's raging, running out of sight
And you wonder about that phrase,
the river snakes away
for there's no head to lead it on
and no tail to chase after
and suddenly, good Heavens, you're talking in riddles

just like Alice in fucking Wonderland.

It makes you wish,
doesn't it though,
that you've got a rabbit of your own to follow.
But you're not a kid anymore, and you've no right feeling lost.

Remember the times you'd pick up the phone on first ring
But even before you put it to your ear,
before you said anything,
You'd given up -
the silence hanging oppressively -
and you'd quietly cut off the bemused caller?

And you'd never been punished.
For the first time in your life, you'd
wanted the gentle reprimand

(sentence first verdict afterwards – off with your head)

But your father was clueless and your sisters too young,
and your mother --

Your mother...

Seventeenth of June.
June. The sixth month.
mi-na-zu-ki
you'd read it aloud slowly from that ancient book
because you were just a kid then,
and learning to read was no easy task.

mi-na-zu-ki

Minazuki. The month of water.

You feel like your sides will split from the irony.

Well, what do you think? I don't mind writing free verse once in a while, it makes a nice change. I apologise if you were waiting for some slash though. XD

Oh – as to Minazuki. Apparently each of the months had traditional meanings in Japanese that were dropped a long time ago. So June really is the month of water. A nice bit of trivia, since it fits in so well with this theme. :)
