"Kendall Diggory. But you can call me Drew" That was how he had introduced himself. Back when they were 11. His grandparents had a beach house next to her grandparent's. That was the summer before her mother got sick.
That first summer they had become friends. They had a lot in common. Both their mother's had Huntington's and they both hated her for it. They spent the days at the beach chasing each other around and the nights at one of their houses. Their grandparents had thought it was great that they became friends.
Her mom died the next summer and he helped her get through that. And she helped him when his died. Slowly they became more then friends.
It was the first night of the third summer, when they were thirteen, that he kissed her. It was the first time he had seen her since his mother died. They slept on the beach that night and someone put a blanket over them as they slept.
The next summer her grandparents stopped letting them share the bed when he slept over, so they slept at his house more often.
The fifth summer he had told her he loved her. She had smiled and said it back. They made love the next night when his grandparents were at some tea thing. You couldn't keep the smile off her face.
He didn't come back the next summer. His grandmother had died that winter and his grandfather just hadn't felt like he could take care of him that summer. That had been the loneliest summer ever.
She didn't see him again until after med school. They ran into each other at a Huntington's lecture. She was the one giving the lecture. They made love in his hotel room that night. He had to leave the next morning. She hadn't seen him since.
Kutner's voice brought her out of her thoughts.
"Thirteen? Are you OK?" She looked up.
"Yeah. I'm fine" She could tell he didn't believe her.
