By the first week of their sixth year, everyone knew that Sirius Black had been disowned by his mother. The rumors were vicious as to what finally broke the camel's back. Regulus wouldn't talk about it and even hexed someone when he was pushed too far. Sirius was tight-lipped about it, and James Potter had an ever-growing list of people to prank so they would mind their own, damn business.

"I know why Black got disowned," Severus Snape announced to a crowded courtyard.

"Watch it, Snivellus," James snapped.

Snape sneered. "He got disowned, because his mother found out that he is a homosexual. That's right, everyone: Sirius Black isn't the lady killer everyone thinks he is. Watch yourselves in the showers, gents."

James jumped to his feet, but Lily Evans beat him to it. She strode across the courtyard and slapped Snape so hard it was audible from within the castle.

"This is low, even for you!" she yelled. "I'm going to Professor Slughorn, and we'll see if you're so smug from detention!"

James raised his wand towards Severus, then lowered it, and shook his head in disgust.

"It's true," said Sirius, glad his voice wasn't shaking. He could still turn this. "I'm gay, and that's why my mum disowned me. If anyone has a problem with this? They can answer to me."

"And me," said James.

"And me," said Remus, taking Sirius' hand.

"And me!" Peter chimed.

The courtyard erupted into applause, and Sirius released a slow breath, but his anger wasn't doused. Snivellus went too far, and Sirius wanted revenge. In the coming days, James led the pride parade by wearing a rainbow pin on his tie and was distributing them for a small fee.

Despite the support, Sirius' anger didn't ebb. In fact, it grew to the point where he would reach a flash of rage. Snivellus took away his right to come out, and he needed to pay for it. One afternoon, he claimed he was going to the library, when really he was cornering Snivellus.

"I know you've been trying to see where we go at night," he said. "This Friday, come to the Whomping Willow. There's a knob on the trunk you can press so it won't kill you. Come alone."

Snape got that glint in his eye and Sirius walked away without a single thought in his head.
