Chasing Life: Goodbye Leo

Plot: This is if Leo doesn't make it. April is consumed with grief and decides she wants to end it all.

After handing out candy canes to other patients, April said goodbye to her family and returned to her hospital bed. She was very tired. Beth entered the room and sat down at the foot of the bed and smiled at her friend.

"It feels so good to give to others," Beth said. "I'm going to donate some money to help find a cure for cancer."

"That's a wonderful idea," April agreed.

Doctor Hamburg entered the room.

"Hi Dr. Hamburg," April said. "Did you come to check my medicine?"

"Yes," Dr. Hamburg replied.

April noticed the sad look on Dr. Hamburg's face.

"What's wrong?" April asked.

"Oh nothing," Dr. Hamburg replied.

"What's wrong?" April asked again.

"We lost a patient who was getting a brain tumor removed," Dr. Hamburg replied.

April gasped and nervously asked, "Was it Leo Hendrie?"

Dr. Hamburg looked at April nervously.

"Was it Leo Hendrie?!" April screamed.

"Yes," Dr. Hamburg said sadly.

"No! It can't be!" April sobbed.

Beth held her friend tightly.

A few days passed, and April refused to talk to anybody.

Back at the Carver house, Brenna was sitting on the couch. Sara entered came in and sat down next to her.

"Mom," Brenna said, "how's April?"

"She's still refusing to talk to anyone," Sara replied.

"I wonder if there's anything I can do," Brenna said.

"Honey, you've tried," Sara said. "April is refusing to talk to anyone. I understand. I was the same way when your father died. But eventually, I talked to your grandparents, who knew exactly how I felt."

"You just gave me an idea!" Brenna exclaimed. "Thanks mom!"

Later at the hospital, April was laying in her bed. Beth came in with some applesauce.

"Guess what I brought," Beth said, handing the applesauce to April.

"Thanks," April said.

"You talked," Beth said.

"Don't get used to it," April said.

Brenna and Bruce Hendrie came into the room.

"April," Brenna said, "you remember Bruce Hendrie."

"Hello April," Bruce said.

"Why did you bring him?!" April yelled.

"I miss my son terribly," Bruce said, "you were his best friend. He always talked about you. I know how you feel."

"I'm sorry for your loss Mr. Hendrie," April said, "but I don't want to talk."

April got up, "I'm going for a walk."

April walked off.

As she walked through the hospital, she remembered first meeting Leo. After snapping back, April got into the elevator, and when to the roof. She walked to the edge and looked down.

"I'm coming Leo," April said.

"So you're just going to kill yourself over me?!" a familiar voice asked. April turned around to see Leo.

"Leo?" April asked. "Is it really you?"

"Yes," Leo replied. "Only you can see me. I came to stop you from making a mistake. If you kill yourself, then there's no going back."

"But I miss you!" April exclaimed.

"I miss you too," Leo said. "But you have to move on."

"How can I?" April sobbed. "It hurts so bad!"

"It'll get better," Leo assured her.

"Okay Leo," April sobbed.

"You're father says hi," Leo said. "Before you go," April sobbed, "what's Heaven like?"

"There's no more pain," Leo said. "And I finally got to meet my great grandfather. What a talker."

Leo and April both laughed. Leo disappeared.

"Goodbye Leo," April sobbed.

Brenna came onto the roof.

"April!" Brenna exclaimed.

April and Brenna ran to each other, and embraced.

"I'm sorry I scared you," April sobbed.

"It's okay," Brenna said.

"I'm going to keep fighting so I can stay here with you," April sobbed.

Leo appeared behind April, and kissed her neck one last time. He then pulled Brenna's hair and disappeared.

"Ow!" Brenna exclaimed. "Don't pull my hair April!"

That night, April slept for the first time in a week. She knew Leo was in a better place and someday she would see him again.

The End.
