I glanced down at my phone and sighed in frustration. Low battery. Exactly the two words I didn't want to see right now.
I fiddled with my large, over-sized phone while I cautiously climbed onto the roof of my shabby red truck, trying to get at least a bar of service.
I muttered out a series of curses as I watched the last of my battery deplete and find myself listening to the annoying three-note jingle play as my screen finally turned black.
Jumping down from my car, I narrowly miss a mirror and land on the worn down black asphalt. Glimpsing around me, I look for anyone, anything.
All I saw was the bareness of the vacant streets. In the far distance, I could see the comforting glow of the city lights, however, I estimated that it would be at least an hour's walk from here.
If I was lucky.
I huff in defeat and find myself cautiously walking to the side of the road, waiting for at least one car to appear. I feel a single raindrop on my forehead, and then another. I glance up into the harsh grey skies as more and more rain starts to fall. Hurriedly, I run into my car for shelter from the unforgiving storm that appeared to be brewing.
Once again, I hop into the front seat of the truck as I try to ignite the engine. The old metal contraption slowly splutters to life and I feel myself sigh in relief. However that warm feeling quickly vanishes as I hear an odd popping noise and see smoke rising from the hood.
A single monotonous beeping noise cuts through the platter of the rain as a red light starts to flicker on and off. I feel my eyes glaze over and my breathing slow. Time passes slowly and my mind starts to wander and drift.
An abrupt knock startles me and I glance out my window.
A figure in black is standing there. I roll down my window and a deep voice greets me. A man with the most peculiar red eyes I've ever seen, is standing before me, drenched in water. He appears to have asked a question, which he patiently awaits an answer to.
An awkward silence fills the air.
I blush and I ask him to repeat the question and he seems to have asked whether or not I would like a ride. I stare suspiciously into his scarlet eyes and squint behind him to see a silver SUV. I decide that my chances with him are better than the ones I have of staying behind overnight.
I shiver at the thought of what lay behind the exterior of the forest around me. I follow the man into his luxurious vehicle and climb into the passenger seat. What happens afterwards surprises me the most.
After he drops me off in the next town, I find myself bumping into him at a coffee shop the next day. He them promptly asked me out for dinner, which I gladly accepted, as who in their right mind would decline an opportunity for free food? After a night of delicious food and embarrassing stories, we departed on a positive note.
And five years later, I find myself beside him at the altar. Who would've known one dreary cold night would lead to some of the best days of my life in the future.
