Broken Rose-Colored Glasses

Ever since he had met Jess (pretty Jess, funny Jess, beautiful Jess, his Jess), Sam had wanted to tell her about his past. He'd wanted to show her who he really was, underneath all that naïve college-boy glamour. It hadn't felt right, lying to her.

He'd often imagined how he would do it. Sometimes, he would tell her in the warm, rosy haze after sex; other times, he'd do it over their morning coffee. He'd imagine her reaction: laughing at the obvious joke, surprise, horror, anger, pity; the possibilities were endless.

However, his training had stuck, no matter how much he wanted to get rid of it. Dad would have been so proud.

He should have told her.

Maybe if he had, she would have broken up with him.

Maybe if he had, she wouldn't be dead.

Maybe if he had, the world wouldn't be ending right now.
