Prologue – A New Life
How long had it been since that day? The last day I say them smiling, telling me everything would be okay?
World War, hah. Nothing but death and destruction all for the sake of what? A few missing crops? Famines have always occurred in some regard, why should everyone else, suffer the consequences!?
It was also that day, I met the one that changed my view of magic forever, it would inspire me to be the very best among them all, but also made me become the most cynical person in the world.
Before the war though, my father gave a special set of playing cards and told me to never lose them for they would be the greatest asset I ever had in my life. As a child I thought he was crazy.
It wasn't long however until I found out I too was a magician, one day I was deal out the cards to play another card game when suddenly the five cards in front of me began floating.
I lowered my hands and they fell to the table and after a bit of concentration they began to float again and all it took was the slightest move of my hands to make them bend to me. I also found out I could use a specific kind of magic called, 'Dealer Magic'
But that's enough of that, we'll get back to it later. Now, back to the story…
For a short time after the war, I lived in an orphanage, a ward of the state. Until, one day a woman by the name of Maya Yotsuba-sama came to this quaint little home for orphans, she waltzed inside and simply looked at me.
For the longest time, it looked like she was staring at my very soul until she said, "Come with me, my child." At the time I was still wondering why she was here, but I was the only one she was talking to.
So, I obliged her, and she gave the center all the required paperwork and just like that I was the now adopted son of one of the Ten Master Clans and little did I know my entire life would change for both the best and the worst.
After learning under the tutelage of Yotsuba instructors and tutors, my mother came to introduce me to her family that was visiting, "Hidetada-chan, come we have visitors."
"Yes, Okāsan." I said as I checked myself one last time in the mirror. I still hadn't changed a bit; my black hair stopped at my neck, I had the tiniest mole near the bottom of left ear lobe on my face and my trusty card deck in my pocket.
Walking downstairs I saw my mother and four other people near the couch. One of them an older man, was wearing a gray business suit with a yellow tie and he had the dullest expression on his face more akin to envy then simple boredom. Next to him a beautiful woman, with long black hair, a slender body, if his mother wasn't more distinctive in appearance, he could almost mistake the two.
In front of them were two children, one of them was a boy, he had the same expression as his father and almost looked identical to him in every way, however his face simply looked like he was analyzing more than faking it. For some reason, he looked familiar to me.
The last person was a girl of similar age, when Hidetada looked at her she was startled and stepped back a little. She had a small blue flower charm in her hair and her hair itself was a dark shade of black, even for her age she is quite beautiful with not a blemish on her to be seen.
"My son, this is my sister, Miya-san and her husband, Tatsurou-san and these little ones and their children, Tatsuya-san and Miyuki-chan. Come and introduce yourself." Maya instructed. I had learned overtime that mostly when mother said something it was more an order than it was a simple question.
Entering the living room, I joined the others and introduce myself, "Hello, my name is Hidetada Yotsuba, its an honor to meet you all." I said while bowing showing my respect. Shaking Tatsurou-ojisan's hands and kissing the hand of Miya-obasan in respect to them both.
I then introduced myself to the kids, "Nice to meet you Tatsuya-san, I hope we can be friends." I said to him with a small smile on my face being sincere. He shook back, but even though it wasn't huge I say his lip quiver upward slightly, so progress as I would say.
I then turned to Miyuki and did the same thing to Miya as I did to her, Miyuki at first was surprised but accepted it and gave a little smile in response, "Nice to meet you, Hide-oniichan." She said in a soft, delicate voice.
All of us relocated to the dinner table and were seated, the meal was quiet, throughout the meal the only person I was able to talk to was Miyuki, I would try and talk with Tatsuya but he'd only shrug or grunt in agreement sometimes.
Miyuki tells me he's not a very talkative person and only talks with those he trusts. I could understand that and hoped that one day we could be friends. Dinner had ended and since her sister and husband were there mother asked all of us to go in the other room and get to know each other better.
All of three of us were watching tv in the living room near the kitchen, however I could hear the faint sounds of talking from our family so I got up acting like I had to go to the bathroom and silently leaned near the door, what I heard was a topic I had never thought would come up so early in my life, marriage?
"So, sister have you started to find the boy a potential match yet?" Miya asked her younger sister. "I'm in the process of finding potential matches for Hidetada at the moment though since you're here…"
"I see… you wanted to see if you could potential set up Miyuki and Hidetada… is that right?" Miya deduced her sister's motive for the visit to her estate. "Heh, perceptive as always dear sister. Yes, since they aren't blood related, they are still legally cousins so I don't think that would be a problem, is there one?" Maya asked of her sister.
"There's another family trying to do the same, the Ichijou family, another one of the Ten Master Clans, their son seems to be quite an early bloomer as of late." Tatsurou replied as he was at the table drinking coffee.
"Is that truly all you seek, nothing but power through genetics, you'll never come to get what you want if you think like that, you have to… adapt if you wish to succeed." Maya countered her brother-in-law's simple logic.
"Power is everything in a magician, adaption is a thought less thought for. That's why a pure bloodline is needed among the Ten Clans, sure your boy has some magical ability, but where did he come from? Is he a half-breed or just some miracle? I won't take that chance." Tatsurou responded with slight anger in his voice as he set down his cup and walked out the room, not even seeing Hidetada at all.
Maya and Miya were the only one's left and Miya responded, "Sister, please you know he is he'll calm down in few minutes."
"Hm, how you claim to 'love' that man is beyond me, but alas you actually think like him, not surprising since its was you that ruined me…" Maya said scornful. Hidetada was surprised at this, "Ruined, what does she mean?" He thought to himself as he went back to the room and rejoined his cousins.
After a while all four of the Shiba's left and now only Hidetada and Maya were left, "I know you were there child." A small, mischievous smile appeared on Maya's lips as she giggled forebodingly.
"W-what do you mean okāsan, I was with…" I tried to respond without flinching, but I failed. "I may be growing older, but I'm slow, don't worry we'll talk about this tomorrow. Good night my son." With that Maya left and went upstairs to her personal room and office space.
Hidetada stood there for a while and did the same. After a while he left for his own room, and before going to bed, took some time to finish some work he was doing on his abilities, he was still new to his new type of magic so he used every bit of spare time he had to fine tune anything he learned or could theorize.
The Next Day
Hidetada woke up at 6:30 AM like he always did and prepared for this day, he knew that his mother would probably either be waiting for him or would find him, so he took the initiative and after getting dressed went out to find her.
Walking towards her room he knocked on the door, he came with no response for a few seconds until the door slid open slowly and inside Maya could be seen in her chair waiting for him.
"Come in my son, we have much to talk about." She said as she beckoned him to come in. He did so and closed the door behind him. Maya then began speaking, "As you heard last night, we've been… discussing the future of both houses Shiba and Yotsuba."
"The original plan was for you to marry your cousin, Miyuki who you just met the other day, but it would seem my own family still wishes to spite me, no matter it won't matter in the long run." She continued as Hidetada listened carefully to his mother.
"But if they don't agree what other options are there mother? Do any of the other Ten Clans have anyone they are willing to actually arrange a marriage?" Hidetada inquired of his mother.
"Yes actually, some of them do; my former betrothed has a daughter about your age, her name is Mayumi Saegusa, she's only a year older than you and she's quite talented and has great looks I am told." Maya began to explain her son's possible suitors.
"Believe it or not, a god friend of mine is actually the head of her clan, her name is Atsuko Mutsuzuka, despite being the head of a great clan she has a propensity to side with me on various matters, I think with time she may even come to agree, the only problem though…" Maya smoothed out.
"Yes… mother?" Hidetada curious to this problem. "She's quite older than you she's currently 22. But I do hear she is quite into younger men, so who knows, ha-ha-ha." Maya answered with a small cackle thinking what she said to be a joke.
Hidetada's jaw was on the floor after hearing of the woman's age, "M-mother she's ten years older than me, why would she even agree?" Hidetada said in a state of disbelief.
"Calm down, my boy I only made a suggestion, it would be your choice, but for the mean time for the next few years you'll be going on various outings with both Miyuki and Mayumi for the time so you can get to know them." Maya answered he son.
Calmed down, Hidetada brought himself back and bowed before his mother, "Yes, mother of course." He rose back up and saw her. "Actually, my boy I have once last thing to tell you." She said as Hidetada was now waiting in slight anticipation again.
"I've come to the decision to make you the successor to the Yotsuba family." Maya stated clearly devoid of any previous lax emotion. Hidetada was now stunned once more.
"B-but mother, only few people know about me. Why do this now?" He asked.
"This way we don't have outside challengers, despite yourself there are other potentials out there you have a legitimate claim, that is why you must prove yourself in the coming years, my boy and prove to them just how powerful you truly are." Maya began to explain to Hidetada her reasons for her decisions. Hidetada simply bowed deeply and thanked his mother for the news.
Maya finished and then she went inside her office, probably to practice her magic or whatever she had the time to do. Despite having lived with his adoptive mother for a few years, he never could understand her true intentions and emotions.
At one point she can be a caring mother and then the next, a manipulative and cunning trickster. "Will I ever see the real side of you mother?" Hidetada said to himself as left her office and back to his room.
It was time to get to work…
