Klaroline set after 3 22.
Klaus stood outside the window of the shabby hotel room, hidden by the surrounding darkness, and watched the blonde vampire as she drew the curtains closed. This was beginning to become a bit of a habit. He had made a promise to himself on the night the history teacher had come so close to killing him that he would never allow himself to feel so vulnerable again. He vowed to cut all ties and go back into hiding to regroup, but in reality he had found it much more difficult than he had anticipated. He liked to believe that it was due to the body he was currently "borrowing" and his need to maintain a close proximity to the witch, but his nightly visits to the hotel car park he was standing in at present told another story.
He had every intention of leaving until the night when she had come to find him, her eyes beautiful eyes brimming with tears. But she hadn't come to find him. She didn't shed her tears of concern for him – they were for Tyler, the boy she thought she was talking to. The kiss they shared as he held her hadn't been intended for him either he had reminded himself. Although it caused him a surprising amount of hurt he had to remember that no matter how real it had felt for him, for Caroline she had been sharing the moment with Tyler, who she believed was edging closer to death. Nevertheless, her compassion and love had overwhelmed him and he could not prevent himself from wondering how it would feel to be loved by her in such a way. Those brief moments he had shared with her had made him feel more alive than he could remember. Ironic, really, given how close he had been to dying that night.
It had been almost a fortnight since then, and he found himself returning almost every night to check up on her at the hotel she was hiding out in. He had made feeble excuses to himself in an attempt to justify why he continued to concern himself with her wellbeing, but had eventually conceded that he was there because he wanted to be. The thought of being away from her for too long made him anxious. He didn't often have much consideration for the emotions of others, but he had to admit to feeling a degree of sympathy seeing her sad and alone in a strange place.
Caroline finished curling the last two sections of her hair and placed the brush on the cheap pine dresser in front of her. She wasn't exactly sure why she was bothering to go to so much effort considering she wouldn't be leaving the hotel. She had barely ventured outside since she arrived here almost two weeks ago – but then that was the whole point of being in hiding she reminded herself. Now that the council knew what she was and all hell was breaking loose in Mystic Falls she didn't have much of a choice but to stay holed up in this less than luxurious hotel. She had no idea what she had left behind and any contact she had had with Bonnie hadn't been much help. She had told her that she was able to find a spell that prevented Tyler's death, but had been very sketchy about the details, including Tyler's whereabouts, saying that it was "complicated" and she wouldn't be seeing him for a while. Caroline felt she was being deliberately vague and frustrating but tried not to let it show – after all she had a lot to be thankful to Bonnie for.
