She sat on a bench, in the rain, watching the lightening light up the night sky. It was beautiful. No city light could compare to the beauty and brightness of the lightning bolts crossing the sky. The rain was cold, but it felt good on her warm skin. She didn't wear a coat; she just sat in the rain, in her jeans and t-shirt soaking up the beauty of the stormy weather. Her lips were turning blue, her skin covered in goose pimples and her body shivering. She didn't care; she wanted to be out there. She sat with a smile, looking up as another lightning bolt crossed the sky.
He stood outside, leaning on the doorway, watching her. He was sheltered from the rain, he was dry, and he was dazed by her beauty, by her freedom. He watched as she stood up and walked into the parking lot. She splashed about in the puddles, twirling around, catching the rain on her skin as she moved in the wind and then she stopped. She noticed him now. She noticed him watching her and she simply smiled. She came closer and took his hand, pulling him in the rain.
They stood their together, facing one another, soaking up their surroundings and each other. He pushed back a hair that was on her face, his fingertips pushing back that strand so gently, putting it behind her ear and his fingertips running down her jaw bone as he stopped and put his finger on her blue lips. He removed it, noticing the smile that lingered on those blue lips. He put his hands on her waist and pulled her too him, their bodies moulding into each other as she put her arms around his neck, filling the gap that was once between them. He lent down and kissed her gently, softly and passionately. Her lips were blue, numb and still smiling. He was cold, shivering and yet still felt warmer than ever.
She turned in his arms; he kept her close to him. She looked up at the night sky as the thunder rumbled throughout. The rain still fell and they didn't move. The lightening turned the dark sky into an abundance of colours. The constant beat of thunder, the silence of the gentle rain and the colours of the lights all mixed together in a moment.
She smiled up at him and he smiled back. He took her hand and they headed inside but not before one last splash in the pools beneath her feet, and not before they captured one last kiss before going back to the job, they loved and hated.
The rain, the thunder, the lightening pool of colours. The splash, the embrace, the kiss.
It was moments like this that was the true release from the horrors they saw from night to night.
It was moments like this that they realised they couldn't live without each other.
