He had perfected the voice. Apart from his lavish clothing, it was the most crucial element of his disguise, and so he had chosen its features carefully. It was first loud, pitched so as to most distract and annoy. Yet its volume was effortless, for the voice was secondly lazy, suggesting an utter impossibility of action in its possessor. It was the stilted inflection, however, which had sealed its success. Strangely, that had been a whim, a playful indulgence which had become his trademark. The trademark of Sir Percy Blakeney, that was to say. The man he had never been.
