Once upon a time...
Dreams were funny little things. As a child, she secretly dreamed of being a beautiful princess waiting for her knight with his pure white stallion. Of dances and parties where she would wear the prettiest dresses.
Slowly but surely, her dreams became nothing and reality became her dreams. No longer was she the beautiful princess but an ugly witch with no place in either world. There were castles to be sure but no knights to rescue her during the war. Through all of its darkness, she held onto the hope that someone would come rescue her from this seemingly hell she was living in. A hero she could call her own.
Coming out of the war, however, she took back the childhood that was once hers. Taking back the dreams she once dreamed, but now they were different. She still dreamed of her knight but he's changed. Instead of a pure white stallion, he now had a broom. Instead of a sword he held a quill. He wasn't the typical knight either. Standing beside him, she took in his freckled features and his orange-red hair while stroking his cheeks. It didn't take long until she saw his sharp blue eyes beneath his glasses and eyelids.
Wetting her thumb, she got rid of the ink stains on his cheeks before pulling him up and helping him back to their room. Giving him a gentle push, she directed him to the bathroom and got under the covers. Feeling one side of the bed sag, she sighed in contentment when he pulled her closed and tiredly told her 'goodnight' before kissing on her forehead. It didn't take long until he fell asleep but once she felt her eyes become heavy she gave in to sleep and dreamed of her fairy tale ending with a little child, who had her father's red hair but her mother's eyes.
And maybe someday soon, she'll tell their little girl that dreams are funny little things.
