Gary was doped up and lying on his bed. Petey was on his own bed across from Gary's, watching the taller boy. His eyes never left him. Gary was about to pass out. That much was obvious just by looking at him. Petey hated seeing Gary like this, but it was for his own good.
Gary had been back at Bullworth for a whole month now. The nurse would check up on him sometimes, but the Head had given Petey the job of making sure Gary took his medicine daily. If he didn't take them, they were going to expel him. Petey hated seeing him like this, but it was for Gary's own benefit.
"Pete.."
Gary had spoken, but his voice seemed far away. It was so soft, Petey had to get up and sit on Gary's bed beside him. Petey couldn't look at him though. Gary had a little drool coming out of his mouth, and it pained Petey to see him like this. Some days, when Gary was worse then usual, he would wonder if it would be OK to let him skip his meds, for just one day at least. But that would mean Gary would get in trouble.
"Petey..." Petey could tell Gary would pass out at any second. "Don't."
"Don't what, Gary?"
"You have that look on your face when you blame yourself for something. Don't. It's probably all Hopkin's" His voice always seemed to get a little more nasty then usual when Jimmy was brought up. "fault anyway, whatever it is."
Was Petey blaming himself for Gary's current state? No...Well...Maybe...He WAS the one to tell Jimmy how to beat the cliques. But, if Gary said not to blame himself, then he wouldn't. Jimmy DID bring him down, not Petey. But still....
Petey opened his mouth to say he was sorry but when he looked down at Gary, he was already passed out. Petey just sighed and wiped the drool from his friend's mouth.
