She remembers the way it used to be.
She recalls the way you ruffled her short hair, laughing and shoving her playfully as she told stupid jokes. The comfort of curling up next to you on the couch, sharing warmth and swapping silly stories. The contagious grins she sent to you across the table when the two of you shared a secret that Rose and Garnet weren't in on. The day you taught her to make a crown out of clovers. Exploring the beach. Sunsets. Watching movies. Flowers. Dancing along to the radio. Training together.
That's really the key word, isn't it? Together. Always together. Pearl and Amethyst, Amethyst and Pearl. A package deal.
Her messy habits didn't bother you much back then. You weren't all that organized either. It was only after Rose died that you became such a neat freak. She figures that it's your way of coping. You have no control over the big things, but being able to control all the smaller things soothes your anxiety.
It hurts her that you pulled away when you needed her most (and she needed you, for that matter). Sometimes, you'd be almost normal again, but then you'd see Steven and before she knew it, you were gone, slipping back into yourself as you stood frozen in the doorway, tears dripping down your cheeks and onto the carpet.
Steven is almost two before you can look at him without breaking down.
She misses your friendship, the closeness you once shared. Rose's death was the rock that smashed through the delicate spiderweb of your relationship. There was never an argument or a discussion. You just drifted away, blue eyes sad and distant, and she let you. Not because she wanted to, but because she realized that you needed time to heal before you could come back and begin to rebuild what was between you.
That time is drawing closer. She can see more and more of the old you emerging every day. It's in the way you speak and move and act. You laugh more freely, your smiles com more often, and just last week, you didn't scold her when she and Steven completely wrecked the kitchen making a giant chocolate cake. Eventually, you'll be prepared for the battles that lie ahead.
You'll face Peridot and Jasper and anything else the universe can throw at you, and you'll do it together. Just like the old days.
