It was coming. The end of Donnie Darko. He'd done it. He'd saved everyone. Gretchen had told him his name had sounded like a superhero's. Looks like he was about to live up to his name. He was smiling and laughing at his own demise. Some people might have thought that was physcyotic. But Donnie was ready and wasn't afraid anymore. Because he had so much to look forward to now. Even if it meant saying goodbye to his family and friends. To all of the people that he'd touched. It wasn't just him that had something to look forward to at the end of his days on Earth. Anybody could have something to look forward to if they just believed in it. Now the engine broke through the wall.
Donnie just kept on laughing until his body wouldn't allow him to. Just before everything went black, he thanked everyone. Thank you, Frank. Thank you, Gretchen. Thank you, Roberta Sparrow. Thank you, mom. Thank you, dad. Thank you my friends. Thank you. Thank you and goodbye. Even if you don't remember me, I'll remember you. And I'll hold on to those memories. Even in death.
Everything flashed through Donnie's mind at once. It was his life. Everything, whether it had been good or bad flashed through his mind. And before he parted, he saw Gretchen's face one last time.
