The young prince betrayed his father, his soul, thinking that he would have everything within his grasp if he was king. He killed everyone who opposed him, and took everything for himself. He manipulated his people into unwilling slaves. He had no heart, for he thought he did not need one. But in the end, even the shiniest of all treasures turn to rust. Even the most powerful ruler will age and die. Even the strongest lust fades with time. And so, as he lay on his deathbed, the people rejoiced. His servants fled with all his treasures. The iron throne, once so intricate and breathtaking to the eyes, was toppled onto one side, the rust taking over. The garden rose had wilted, falling onto the cold ground. After everything he had done…he was still empty. And very soon, there would be nothing left of him.
Aro lay on his velvet bed, his thoughts drifting. He remembered when he was just young boy, a few millennia ago. His mother's cooking so well. He remembered him and his dad playing in the meadows, their smiles so innocent. But he had given all that up. The world would offer him no solace, no happiness. To survive, he would have to be a monster. Then, slowly his lips parted, the words coming out so smoothly, yet so sorrowful.
"I am a rock.
I am an island.
Books are my shield,
And poetry my castle.
The world is a dark night
People,
Are the rain clouds.
Would I have been hurt,
If I had never loved?
I am a rock.
I am an island."
As he finished this, he looked out of his window, and the full moon acoompanied by a yriad of stars, greeted his sight. Yes…the moon. An eternal beauty which will always be alone, for all the power it wields…
"I am just like you," he uttered to himself, "Eternally empty."
Remembering his duties as the leader of the volturi, he rose from his bed. His wife could not be with him tonight. He had never loved her, though she had been a faithful wife and companion. After all…love is for fools. Within moments, he was striding to the great hall, where he would meet his treasured guard, and they would put an end to the madness that threatened his rule. Joham.
