The Flying Horse

Rodney followed behind Jennifer as they walked down the corridor. He caught up with her until they were side by side.

"Uhm, I suppose this is a bad time to tell you I don't actually have any beer?" He waved his bandaged hand and sucked in a breath when he forgot about the damage. "Brain cells and all that."

Jennifer sighed. "It's all right, Rodney. You can buyme one."

"But where?"

They stepped into the transporter. And Jennifer gingerly tapped the screen.

"Not the Mess Hall?" Rodney asked nervously as they stepped out at their new location.

Jennifer eyed him critically, then wrist bumped his shoulder to avoid her bandaged hands and direct him down the corridor. "This way."

They soon came to a door with a sign hanging up over it. There was a picture of a Pegasus and the letters underneath said 'The Flying Horse.'

The door opened and Rodney gasped as Jennifer led him into the room.

The lighting was low and there were a few tables and chairs around the small room. One side of the room was all windows leading onto a balcony with more tables and chairs. The view was across the city and Rodney picked out the Central Tower and all the other piers. The evening lights twinkled from each window in a warm orange glow.

Some of Rodney's colleagues were in the room and gave him sidelong glances before returning to their drinks.

Jennifer walked up to the bar being manned by one of the military personnel. "Two beers, please."

"Put them on my tab," Rodney added.

The bartender took pity on them and carried the drinks over to the table Rodney picked out in the corner of the room by the window. There was a candle in the middle of the table and Rodney eyed it nervously.

"So..." he said. "Come here often?" He winced.

Jennifer smiled. "Sometimes."

"I didn't even know it was here."

"I can't believe you've been here over four years and you didn't know about the bars," Jennifer said with her eyebrows raised.

Rodney drummed his hands on the table, then desisted with a wince at the pain. He looked down at the table and mumbled, "And you've only been here a few months and already know."

"You need to get out more."

Rodney grimaced. "Too much work to do. Saving the city and the Pegasus Galaxy doesn't leave time for frivolous pursuits like bar hopping. Did you say there were more?"

"I've only been once, but there's also Pier Seven."

Rodney frowned. "But there are only six piers."

"Exactly."

They downed their drinks while enjoying the view and each other's company, until Rodney's eyelids started to droop.

"Am I boring you?" Jennifer asked incredulously.

"Not at all. Nice view," he said without taking his eyes off her. He smiled. "Saving lives really takes it out of you."

She reached across the table and touched his bandaged hand with her own. "Thank you."

Rodney hummed and blinked. "Ow."

She grinned. "Sorry! We can come back another day if you like. I feel quite tired too after all the excitement."

Rodney stood up on wobbly, aching legs. "I'll walk you home," he said sleepily.

They left the bar together with whispers following them.
