Beyond the Moon
Harry rolled over and looked at the moon from his bed in the hospital wing. It was so bright.. He knew that very same moon was shining over Voldemort, too. A wave of now-familiar panic washed over him like the ocean awallowing a grain of sand..so many things had happened tonight. Peter had betrayed a Potter once again. And Voldemort. Voldemort, he wasn't just the murder, the destroyer, the frightening beast lurking in the darkness anymore, he was real. He could be anywhere, he could be here, he could be at the Weasly's, he could be after Lupin, or Sirius..and then he remembered, Sirius was here, with him. So was Mrs. Weasly, Ron and Hermione, Dumbledore..It was almost even a comfort to see the original, out-of-commission Moody laying several beds down. Several beds down, past Cedric. A quiet sob escaped him, followed by a tear. Sirius momentarily stirred, but then curled up once again.
He forced himself to look away. It hurt to much..the closed curtain around Cedric's bed seemed to be taunting him. He could barely picture his face..and he wondered how many times he wished horrible things about him when him and Cho had been walking hand in hand through the corridors. Looking back now he could see how immature he had been then, and he took everything back in full.
Not for the first time, he thought about how Voldemort has affected his life, and others too.. His parents dead, Sirius imprisoned, Neville's parents committed, and now Cedric..
It was too much. If only the potion for a dreamless sleep worked in waking hours, too. He sighed. Reaching up for the remainder of the poition, he drank it in one gulp. The moment his head touched the pillow, slumber took over.
.....
Sirius was alerted by Harry's sigh. Rising off his haunches, he scanned the hospital wing for any sign of danger. None. He didn't even feel Harry was safe here, and he considered Hogwarts the safest place in Britian. Luckily he had dog reflexes.
But if danger were to arrive, Sirius wouldn't need think twice about defending Harry. he was all he had left. Lily and James gone, and him stuck with the blame..and the pain. It wasn't him! All that had kept him alive through Azkaban was the fact that he knew he was innocent. But that wasn't always enough, when you had to put it next to the fact that two of your best friends had been murdered. It wansn't fair... scum like Wormtail ran free, or as free as you could be serving Voldemort, and we had to suffer..
Harry's breathing was now becoming steady and regular. Sirius padded over and licked his hand before settling back down close to Harry. I'll protect you, he thought, I'll protect you always.
.....
Somewhere beyond the moon, an angel with red hair look down on her son, and one of her best friends, as they tried to sleep after their whole lives had changed, again. She knew Sirius would always protect Harry, and she would always protect them, but that didn't stop the pain. She beant over and kissed the both on their foreheads. Her heart leaped with joy as a smile appered first on Harry's face, then Sirius's. I'll be with you, she whispered.
And the pearly white stag beside her smiled.
A/N: So, what do you think? It's only my second fic, so be kind. And review please! This took a long time. I was not born with a gift for writing. Oh yeah, the angel is me!! Lily is such an awesome charachter...
