Title: Thermite, a Vignette

Rating: PG

Summary: She was a physicist; of course she knew what Thermite was.

Disclaimer: I own nothing- seriously- I'm a college kid, I. Own. NOTHING.

A/N: I don't think this actually makes any sense now that I read it. This is just a short thing that I wrote in my English class yesterday- beats reading Faulkner, talk about your mind fcuks. ;-) Anyway- feel free to tell me it sucks.

She knew what Thermite was.

Of course she knew what it was, she has a physics degree.

Somewhere, Grissom must have realized that. But often times he gotso caught up in being able to share his knowledge that he glossed over his surroundings.

Sara often found herself ceding her moments in the proverbial spotlight to Grissom in order to let him have the joy of imparting his knowledge on others. Teaching was what made him happiest. Sara knew this. She's perfected the art of pretending to look like she was absorbing new information, rather than hearing information she had taught to college freshmen when she was a physics T.A. She had long since stopped trying to be his "star pupil". He knew how intelligent she was. She didn't need to prove that to him.

She had also long given up on trying to convince him that she was 'the one' for him. That didn't mean that her feelings for him had vanished, she still felt the need to make him…she didn't know, happy? This was her small way. She had seen his face a few months back when he told her and Greg they were 'rendering him obsolete'. On the surface he looked impressed but she could detect something deeper, as if he truly felt useless right then. While it wasn't her responsibility to take care of him personally, she didn't want him to feel like that. Hence… the Thermite moment.

She wasn't mad about his inaction, just sadly accepting of it. She had settled on the being the best thing he'd never have.

"I guess some people just aren't meant to be together."

It was out of her mouth before she could stop it. However, she refused to look sad or even accusatory. She tilted her head and raised her eyebrow in defiance. The look on Grissom's face was almost comical. She had definitely surprised him. Apparently he hadn't been expecting her new attitude. Well, at least not her voicing it.

As dense as he could be when it came to Sara, she was sure her message was clear, and she could see in his eyes that he got it.

'I'm done. The next move is yours…'

She followed Warrick out of the room leaving Grissom to process the evidence.
